What the loss of a Conservative seat tells us about England's changing middle class | John Harris
The shock result in Chesham and Amersham isn’t just about HS2. Deeper shifts are occurring that ought to worry the Tories, says Guardian columnist John Harris

AN interesting article. The drums had been beating for this for a week or two now but still losing a 16000 majority in a seat that they have always won is a shaker for the fat ****.
I absolutely agree with the writer who has identified the shifting sands in UK politics. Real conservatives vote on selfish issues like town planning but they are also appaled at the new tory obsession with "culture war" wedge issues like statues and brexit.
I see it here in my hometown and the neighbouring Chester constituency. The tories under johnson are resembling the Gop in being sustained by a white trash uneducated underclass.
It is clear from the collapse of the Labour vote that most left wing voters threw in with the Libs in order to give the tories a kicking. I think we will see a lot more of that . I would also like to see a socialist alliance on a more formal basis going into the next election.
Anyway, that is in the future.
For the present, Johnson is very much undermined by this and the nasty party will spend some time considering the result. The debits are starting to pile up for the most corrupt administration in British history.
