The US has a long and gruesome history of slavery that has affected almost every part of its culture. Children in school learn the harsh circumstances that slaves were forced to live with and the incredible cruelty white slave owners showed them. American history teachers know how important it is to teach the horrors of slavery—not only so the mistakes of the past aren’t repeated but because the long-term oppression and cruelty toward black people extends even to modern times in important cultural issues such as police brutality and a cycle of poverty that is directly linked to racism caused by slavery.

What isn’t often taught is that there were many black people who not only participated in the slave trade but who often profited greatly from it. They owned slaves as property in order to enhance their own economical well-being by having free labor for their plantations. Many were biracial children of former white masters and were either freed or were left some property in a will. The American South is infamous for using slaves on their large plantations, and many of the black slave owners on this list are from South Carolina and Louisiana. Some were considered slave magnates (for owning more than 50 slaves), but others earned their place simply for their unique stories

I'm trying to figure out if they were uncle Tom's who if were alive today would probably just be administrators at the local black welfare office

Slavery CAN be ok..... with the right owner. My GGGp had 17. They stayed after being "freed".
They all made some money. Descendants are still around White sands/Selma

United States is not even in the top 10 nations with slavery, it isn't even close.
Yet - everyone loves to talk about "America's slavery past!!! " - like it is the shame of the world.
It is ridiculous.
It was terrible, no one is saying it wasn't... but compared to the rest of the world - we were very small players in the slave trade.
You ever hear people say "France was built on slavery!!"... no you don't. Why not? They not only had looong history of using slaves, but they went out and conquered territories and made slaves out of the people there!!
America's slavery past is so overly exaggerated it is absurd.

The US banned importing slaves in the early 1800s. From then on, we bred our own.
Our slave population grew to 4 million with the Confederacy being almost 40 percent slave

I wonder why black slave owners are not talked about these days?

Great job taking the attention away from the BLACK slave owners and the thread topic. Is there some reason why you don't want to talk about the top ten BLACK SLAVE OWNERS?

"What isn’t often taught is that there were many black people who not only participated in the slave trade but who often profited greatly from it."

Define "many". And, while you are doing it, couple more questions:

What is the ratio of black owners to whites who participated in the slave trade? Does this excuse/justify white ownership of black slaves?

Looks like you had to obscure your statement that BLACK PEOPLE OWNED SLAVES TOO by offsetting it with something else. Do you not feel comfortable about the notion that BLACK PEOPLE OWNED SLAVES? Do you feel compelled to divert attention away from this?

Good questions
But then you turn into a complete moronic tool
Slavery is an abomination ...no one's justifying it

Why is the left so silent about it in modern-day Africa ?
Or the middle east?
Or Asia?

We see these threads from time to time.
Also threads about blacks fighting for the Confederacy

Your motives are quite obvious

What these threads do not bring up is most blacks who owned slaves were free blacks who bought family members

Sounds like you're trying to justify blacks participation in the slave trade including owning, selling and breeding slaves. Not to mention to legal principle of being able to own a person for the rest of their life is credited to a black guy winning a legal dispute.
