Tomorrow...

Last time I watched Daytona it was like a bunch of driving and then several wrecks at the end of the race.
I got a Firestone pit pass some years ago at Laguna Seca--different, but really enjoyable. I got to see Paul Newman and his pit--that was something. He had six big ass motorhomes that he fed his crew in. It is the only real race I ever attended and I had a great time.

Nowhere is the dedication and vigilance of our fallen more sacred than at the tomb of the Unknowns.

The professionalism and meticulous attention to detail in the protocol of the military people who go to civilian funerals of veterans to fold and present the flag to the next of kin always bring tears to my eyes too. It is a powerful thing and I have yet to hear any person ever not appreciate it.

More than anything, on memorial day, we should stop the pointless bickering, remember all those who fought for America, and be thankful for their sacrifice and God's grace, for making possible the greatest nation on the planet.

"O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!

America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness

And every gain divine . . . "

Aww, too bad that's not actually a real pic, or that it has nothing to do with a soldier KIA. The guy died in a motorcycle accident. That photo is at least 10 years old.

.

So, Is he less dead because he died in a bike wreck? Is she not allowed to grieve on Memorial Day because of that?

My husband died of medication complications, so I don't have the right to grieve on Memorial day?

sigh

We had a small, casual service for my husband's funeral, but still had Military Honors, and the respect and precision with which the two Airmen folded that flag and handed it to me was very moving. The screenshot of me being handed the flag is the wallpaper on my desktop.

Thank you for caring, Foxfyre

I will be down at the Federal Military Cemetery in Fayetteville, Arkansass, saying hi to all the dead people...
They dont want you there. They are threatening to haunt the entire cemetary if you show up. They said, "Moonglow fuckin sucks and we will get all supernatural and shit if we see his stupid face around here". :dunno:

Me too, the young ones break my heart that they had to leave this world early.

My father was a veteran of the Korean War.

He was buried with full military honors. I even have the shells from the salute right here on My desk.

My uncle, my mother's only brother, was career Army. He was a veteran of WWII and Korea where he was nearly fatally wounded that sent him home for good. He is buried in a family cemetery here in New Mexico but had full military honors. At least everything but the 21-gun salute.

All the other departed family members who are veterans have had at least the flag ceremony. It is a noble and valuable service provide by our U.S. military.

Memorial Day is for the living who remember.
They are the ones who needed this.

Anyone who understands survivor's guilt understands what Memorial Day is about.

I guess they have to lose someone they loved to really understand this day.

Unless Dementia is kicking in, I remember that the only person that gets 21 gun salutes is the president.
Your Uncle got 18.
I was on the gun team that fired 18 salvos at the funeral for one of my friends.

My wife used to live in Daytona Beach. They have a hell of a swapmeet there. Right next to the race track.

I love the tradition where the Guard who fires the salute save three shells to give to the next of kin. I placed them in the folds of my hubby's flag, which is in the traditional case.
