Today, the fact that the Southern Democratic mayors and political leaders are largely African American keeps most reactionary and backward white workers hostile to that party, even when it advocates policies in the interests of all ordinary working people. And they got some pretty high profile convictions. The Lynching slowed way down. Granted, this was an extinction of the Eisenhower administration. But this started the heavy change of blacks to the Dems and the change of the Dixiecrats to the Republicans. You can't rewrite this history.

As for the exact timing African Americans switched their support to Democrats, or whites switched their support to Republicans, this is a rather moot and idiotic point. Did it all happen in one instant in 1964? Of course not! Starting with big bad FDR (/s), larger numbers of blacks began to vote for Democrats because they, particularly in the North, seemed to offer another way forward. Eleanor Roosevelt, the New Deal reforms, the anti-fascist / anti-Nazi war that FDR led, all showed African Americans that finally they might have another party to leverage in their own interests. Why support Republicans in the South when they were practically non-existent there and were moreover anti-New Deal?

By LBJ’s times African Americans were already challenging white Democratic segregationists at Democratic National Conventions as “Freedom Democratic” delegations. Most Southern whites, historically segregationist and once pro-slavery, were loyal to their Democratic Party but were uncomfortable seeing blacks joining in numbers and challenging segregation, and embarrassing them at National Conventions.

Both LBJ’s Civil Rights legislation and the Republicans’ later “Southern Strategy” induced ever more whites to switch to the ever more reactionary Republican Party. The “Dixiecrats” and George Wallace types were just part of that transition. Today, the fact that the Southern Democratic mayors and political leaders are largely African American keeps most reactionary and backward white workers hostile to that party, even when it advocates policies in the interests of all ordinary working people. Not that the Democratic Party always does that. It is, after all, only another more “liberal” capitalist party.

The counter argument to the Big Switch Paradigm, is a very serious and well supported argument. Stopping reading, because you disagree with an early point in the article is avoiding a very important idea.

The TIMING of the swing of black voting, is one of the primary arguments in FAVOR of the Big Switch Theory. If historical records contradict that, that is not moot.
