Ten thousand soldiers now stationed in Europe will be returned to the United States under new re-alignment plans announced by the Defense Department.

I don't understand why it says they're leaving Europe when many of them are moving to Italy. More smoke and mirrors?

Some of the units really will relocate to CONUS (or, more likely, their flag will while the bodies move on to someplace else), but for the rest of it...methinks the author may be geographically challenged.
 
We shouldn't have any soldiers in Europe.
 
The heavy presence in Europe was rational during the cold war, now not so much.

Some transferring to Italy makes sense, that is very close to North Africa which has is more of a focus recently and going forward.

Wonder what ever happened to my old M-60 based in Furth? YC-32, 2/37th Armor, 4th Armored Division.
