Now answer me this one question:

How does protesting stop it?

It increases it, due to all the transportation usage to get to the event.

Earth hour is the most silly event of all though, as turning off lights and devices for an hour or so, then turning them on again, uses more electricity than keeping them on.

Meaning to save energy you would have to leave off your lights and devices for more like days at a time, to make a big difference, and Earth hour increases said energy use.

The Globe and Mail reports the “Act On Climate Change” march included “representatives from First Nations, environmental activists and political groups” who are trying to convince politicians to ban oil sands extraction and prevent pipelines from being built to bring that oil to market.
