They had what they believed was a "credible risk", after a captured US pilot told them there were over 100 more ready to be used, and that the US would drop a couple a week until there was nothing left.

And also the Soviets broke their neutrality, and were invading them also.

And even with all of that, the War Cabinet was still deadlocked at 3-3. With the decision finally passed to the Emperor, because the hardliners would have seen the country destroyed before surrendering.

But there was still a coup between that decision being made and the broadcast of the "Golden Voice" recording ordering the surrender. A lot of people still did not want to surrender, and could have continued to fight on no matter what. If the Emperor had said to keep fighting, the cabinet would have reset to 6-0 in favor of the war, and then it likely would not have stopped until he was dead.

And even with the nukes, an estimated 4-5 by December, the invasion was still set to kick off on 1 November 1945. Okinawa was being changed rapidly into a massive staging base, with soldiers from Europe being sent there as fast as possible to participate in the Olympic phase of Operation Downfall.

And the AF operates a longer range and keeps the boom because it's saved more than one air crew by locking on. And the AF doesn't use a Rio, it uses a Wizzo that is at least a qualified pilot and the AF 2 seater fighters all have controls for the Wizzo. So keep retelling those stories you hear at the Navy Bar as your own.
