I thought it was legal to carry guns.

California is different. Last time I was there is was not legal to carry a weapon in your vehicle without a permit (which dont' exist for all intents & purposes). However if you do so, for "transport" purposes, the firearm must be unloaded and in a locked box. The ammunition must not be accessible to the occupants of the vehicle (so locked in the trunk) otherwise you can be charged with 1) possession of a concealed weapon and 2) possession of a loaded weapon.

It's been about 20 years since I've had to deal with California laws so my information may not necessarily be current especially after the latest SCOTUS ruling nullifying a significant portion of California's gun & carry laws.
