After the Emancipation Proclamation, over a million slaves escaped to Union lines
And promptly herded into camps and plantations and force to stay there. Sherman handed out land to some, to keep them from following the Army and demanding to be fed. After the war most of the land was taken back and handed to the state govts. and military governors to do with as they pleased.
