A federal judge struck down Texas’s restrictive photo voter-identification law and Republican lawmakers’ most recent attempt at fixing it, finding neither version corrects provisions that intentionally make it harder for poor and minority citizens to vote.

“Not one of the discriminatory features” of Texas’s original photo ID law “is fully ameliorated by the terms” of the measure Texas lawmakers passed earlier this year, U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos of Corpus Christi said in the ruling Wednesday.

Furthermore, the 2017 version of the voter ID law “trades one obstacle to voting with another -- replacing the lack of qualified photo ID with an overreaching affidavit threatening severe penalties for perjury,” Ramos said.

"Does Texas law allow you to shoot a protester if you see him or her defacing a Confederate statue? A Texas man claiming to be a police academy instructor says the answer is yes."

:wtf::uhh::cuckoo: Crazy Killer Cops!

Texas Penal Code 9.43 clearly states the private property being protected with deadly force needs to be "tangible and moveable." A statue doesn't meet that qualification either.

What else would you expect from a minority judge appointed by a minority President? That decision was more predictable than the winner of a majority minority Congressional district.

GOP strategy for decades is trying to stop black and brown people from voting.
Clearly, they know the growth in GOP voters is negative. As Obama won by 9.1M
more votes in 2008 and by 6M in 2012. Think about it.
Recall, One Republican in Pennsylvania even publicly admitted that

Well, it goes to SCOTUS, maybe? But they keep cutting them down. So will they hear it?
I think not.

Perhaps you should look up the definition of tangible. Are you saying the statue isn't something that can be touched?

While you're at it, look up the definition of movable. A synonym is transportable. By definition it means something that can be moved.

Since the statue can be touched, it's tangible. Since you whiners cried about those statues to the point a bunch of pussies on local governing bodies pandered to you and reMOVED those statues, they fit the definition of movable. What that means is according to Texas Penal Code 9.43 is that deadly force CAN be used to protect that property.

That horse has orange diarrhea. The Republicans want to run the diarrhea for president in 2020.

The question begs...why do dems fear voter ID?

Don't fear it! Not necessary. Waste of time and money.
Voter fraud is done by the people running the equipment.
Who have ID, already.
How's that finding them 3 million voters the Douche claims voted against IT!?

LOL. Simple minds are easy to please.

As it is, I strongly believe in protecting the integrity of our voting system, but I'm also against disenfranchising American voters.

The best way, IMO, to make Voter ID work is to provide government IDs and give voters 3-5 years to comply. Of course, that also have the benefit of requiring any person looking for a job, an apartment, etc to show their government ID. This would protect our voting system and block illegals from driving, renting, working, etc.

I find it Ironic one needs no ID to vote in lawmakers who make laws for various things in our society that require ID

The idea is for people that vote to prove they are who they claim they are. It's the Democrat party strategy, as with most other things they do, to call it racist in hope they can get a minority judge appointed by a minority President to strike it down. That's what happened here.

Interesting how when a black isn't running, many of those that said they didn't vote due to skin color stayed at home. Wonder why black voter turnout dropped by 7% in 2016. Actually, I don't wonder why. It's quite clear.

A federal judge delivered a decisive one-two punch Wednesday to Texas Republicans, issuing a permanent injunction on two Texas voter ID laws—the original 2011 law, SB14, and SB5, in which the Texas GOP tried to remedy the original law by loosening its restrictions.

U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos of Corpus Christi wrote:

...the only appropriate remedy for SB14's discriminatory purpose or discriminatory result is an injunction against enforcement of that law and SB5, which perpetuates SB14's discriminatory features. With respect to the VRA § 2 discriminatory purpose finding, elimination of SB14 "root and branch" is required, as the law has no legitimacy.

Ouch.

The Austin American-Statesman has some background on the lengthy path to this ruling, which originated when Texas Republicans passed one of the nation's most restrictive voter ID laws in 2011:

Civil rights groups, Democratic politicians and minority voters sued in 2013, arguing that the Republican-backed law violated the U.S. Voting Rights Act by targeting low-income, Latino and African American voters, who were less likely to have approved forms of ID but more likely to vote for Democratic candidates.

Ramos agreed, and the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld most of her ruling in 2016, saying the voter ID law discriminated against minorities and poor people, infringing on the voting rights of about 600,000 registered Texas voters who lacked a government-issued photo ID.

The appeals court, however, said Ramos’ work wasn’t done and returned the case to Corpus Christi with instructions to determine whether the law was written to be intentionally discriminatory.

It was, Ramos ruled in April — dismissing Republican assertions that the law was intended to combat fraud, with the judge calling that rationale a “pretext” to suppress the voting rights of minorities and reduce support for Democrats.

Wednesday’s ruling pertained to the remedies for the 2011 law, which was apparently irredeemable even though Jeff Sessions’ Justice Department had declared the fixes “constitutionally legal and valid.”

More background from our own Stephen Wolf on the April ruling and the redistricting Armageddon Texas Republicans now face.

By definition, tangible means it can be touched. Are you saying the statue can't be touched?

Are you saying the statue can't be moved? You do know it doesn't have to move on it's own to fit the definition of movable. It simply has to be able to be moved.
