The Shawshank Redemption at 30: is it really the greatest film ever made?

I suspect not. But its worth a shout.
I will have a think about this.
Of course it isn't. It's okay, but the book if way better, as is usually the case. The unnecessary race swap of the character "Red" didn't really help the film tell the story any better. Though it may have helped ticket sales.

The movie touches upon issues of injustice and just how screwed up the entire world is and how corrupt it all is, and the ability of one man to somehow rise above it all and stick it to the man after struggling with them for decades of torturous hell treatment. It represents some hope at least to try and make things right again.

But don't you worry, Kamala will fix it all and not just be an empty dress.

No worries.

The book was part of an anthology of four stories, it was about a hundred pages. Kings best stuff is his nonfiction
Morgan Freeman was a better Red than in the book.
His race is never mentioned
His narration makes the film

Solid movie that i consider great but I am going to go with there is no such thing as "the greatest movie ever made". It's like food. You cant compare an amazing steak to amazing ice cream. It's in the handful of great drama's about prison and redemption though.

AFI's shitty list has it at 72. Their list was assembled by someone who stopped watching movies in the 50's.

In terms of a movie you can watch again and again and again…..it has to be near the top
First time I watched the movie it was entertaining.
Second time viewing found it a lame fantasy story.
Doubt there will ever be a third.

Certainly one of Steven King's best works, and it translated well to the screen.

"Greatest Movies of All Time" is a list that would have to be compiled by someone who has made a lifetime effort to watch as many films as possible, and that certainly isn't me. Also, Film Critics often look for things that the casual audience member doesn't care about, which results in films like Clockwork Orange being highly regarded yet totally disgusting.

Film critics look at things like artistic merit, cinematography, uniqueness……Things most viewers find boring.

Clockwork Orange was stupid

The book describes him as a redheaded Irishman. Hence the name "Red".
