The reality is that most German and Japanese cars sold in the American Market now are made in the US, while most "American" cars sold in the US are made in Mexico.

Tariffs are actually the reason why foreign automakers have plants here. They can avoid the tariffs if a certain % of the production is done here.

You're correct that many American designs are not so great though.

As for production of US cars, most sold here are still made here, but a lot of them are made in Canada. Most of the Mexican production of cars involves companies like Volkswagen and Porsche.

Ultimately, the quality of a car has less to do with where it is made than it does how it is designed.

Japanese designs tend to be far superior to American and European designs in terms of durability. That being said, another important aspect is quality control in production. Japanese automakers typically have stricter standards in production than many American or European companies, regardless of where the production actually occurs.

It also helps that most of the Japanese automaker plants here don't have unionized labor.
