Once they acknowledge to you there's a "crack in the facade" it opens up the possibility there's more cracks. Ones they don't want to look for. Ones that make them look the other way when presented with them.

If they say, "okay, he never had the authority to unilaterally enact tariffs" maybe they ask themselves what other illegal stuff has been done. Like illegally appointing US Attorneys. When Trump says a trade deal is at risk, he's violating the terms of the deals he's already signed. If you can't be trusted to honour your commitments and promises, you are dishonest and untrustworthy.

When Europe says that they're not prepared to ratify a trade deal because Trump has already violated its terms, YOU'RE in trouble.

There is no point in signing a deal you're not going to honour. Trump never signed a contract he wasn't ready to tear up if it suits him.
