We know the Russians were telling US diplomats as far back as 2008 that Ukraine entering into NATO was the reddest of red lines. That they saw it as a existential threat to their country. That they didn't want to get into a conflict with the west over it but they would. it likely goes back farther than that but we have concrete evidence of it that long ago. Putin after putting the tanks on the border went to the leadership of NATO and told them if you give me written assurance that Ukraine won't be admitted to NATO he would back off otherwise he's invading. NATO said fuck off. Then bragged about it. It's just dumb decision after dumb decision or quite possibly intentional.
