After every mass shooting we hear many hypotheses of why people go on murder sprees. Mental illness, violent video games, etc. But we never hear the real reason:

Excerpt:
Immediate early gene analysis and single unit recordings from VMHvl during social interactions reveal overlapping but distinct neuronal subpopulations involved in fighting and mating. Neurons activated during attack are inhibited during mating, suggesting a potential neural substrate for competition between these opponent social behaviours.

"The mating circuit acts like a gate on the aggression circuit and actively suppresses nearby fighting neurons when there is a potential mate around," says Lin.

Also, this was confirmed through research as early as the 1970s:
Article: Body Pleasure and the Origins of Violence

"Body Pleasure and the Origns of Violence"

excerpts:

"The percent likelihood of a society being physically violent if it is physically affectionate toward its infants and tolerant of premarital sexual behavior is 2 percent (48/49). The probability of this relationship occurring by chance is 125,000 to one. I am not aware of any other developmental variable that has such a high degree of predictive validity. Thus, we seem to have a firmly based principle: Physically affectionate human societies are highly unlikely to be physically violent."

"Available data clearly indicate that the rigid values of monogamy, chastity, and virginity help produce physical violence."

"If we strive to increase the pleasure in our lives this will also affect the ways we express aggression and hostility. The reciprocal relationship between pleasure and violence is such that one inhibits the other; when physical pleasure is high, physical violence is low. When violence is high, pleasure is low. This basic premise of the somatosensory pleasure deprivation theory provides us with the tools necessary to fashion a world of peaceful, affectionate, cooperative individuals."
....

In the US, we encourage violence allowing it in our media and entertainments, while denying positive sexuality restricting those pursuits censoring pornography, teaching sexual abstinence, condemning premarital sex, etc. If our citizens can't have sex or pursue solo sexual enjoyments like masturbation and erotica, then the brain's ability to feel just one thing at a time pleasure or violence, it'll be experiencing violence and aggression as people who try to pursue sensual and sexual delights can't do so.

And yet we still aren't being told this after every mass shooting. Everyone's acting like they have no idea why it's happening when we've known why for over 40 years.
