The NAACP has publicly called for Black athletes to shun/boycott colleges in States that have taken action to - let's say - "water down" the effectiveness of Black votes in what they see as a repudiation of the spirit of the Voting Rights Act. To put it in more pedestrian terms, these States have reversed re-districting initiatives that were intended to guarantee a number of Black-majority Congressional districts, so that Blacks could elect "one of their own" in those districts. And it has worked.
Parenthetically, from a Constitutional standpoint, if the Constitution, in effect, says that you may not discriminate on the basis of race, and a law says that you MUST discriminate on the basis of race, the law has to stand aside. These States are acting in accordance with their Constitutional obligations (even if mid-decade redistricting is a little bit odd).
Regardless, the general opinions on this boycott initiative seem to support the notion that such a boycott would be devastating to the mostly-Southern colleges with dominant athletic teams featuring hi-viz Blacks.
Would those State legislatures give a shit? How would the colleges themselves react to such a boycott? Would it ultimately impact teams' sports revenues?
I personally think that NCAA Division 1 sports are an academic abomination, so I couldn't care less, but most sports fans would care about such a thing?
What do yinz think?
