On this 60 Minutes presentation scientists are going to alter the genetic makeup of mice in order to combat Lyme disease.

The Island of Nantucket has produced ideal conditions for the habitat of the white footed mouse, which is a carrier of Lyme disease and passes it on to ticks that bite it. The thick brush and grass created by letting nature 'go wild' makes it difficult for predators to control the mouse population, thus the explosion in their numbers and the resulting increased Lyme disease infections in the residents.

Watch the episode and present your comments. My comment is below.

White footed mice can be easily and cheaply trapped in their thousands (while waiting for the genetic cure) thus quickly reducing their populations, which should have a positive effect on reducing Lyme infections.
