Love to hear the racists chime in on Civil RightsThe Southern Strategy was a legitimate response to the five years of black ghetto riots that followed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the War on Poverty that was declared the same year. These were followed the same year by a black ghetto riot in Harlem. The Voting Rights Bill signed in 1965 was followed by the Watts Riot in 1965. The Open Housing Act of 1968 was followed by nation wide black ghetto riots.
When evaluating the civil rights movement, go beyond the ideals of the movement, and consider the results. There is often wisdom in tradition. Jim Crow legislation was based on sound instinct.
Millions of he same people who voted enthusiastically for Franklin Roosevelt during the 1930's and early 1940's voted with equal enthusiasm for George Wallace three decades later. When they voted for Wallace they were voting against the rise in black social pathology that followed the civil rights movement.
The Democrats should have learned from the Wallace phenomenon. Because they did not, the United States became a Republican country. There were no black ghetto riots of any consequence during the first Nixon presidential term. The white majority rewarded Nixon with a landslide victory over George McGovern, even though the War in Vietnam had become unpopular.
