The Medicaid Cuts in "The Big Beautiful Bill": An Honest Discussion

If you don't cut the waste and fraud the entire program will end and people who really need it won't have it...

And they should also get Medicaid coverage. If we want them to serve then it will NOT add costs to the budget.
Hey init, you don't live in communist Russia or China. There is no free lunch. Now run along and report to your commie handlers. You're a fool.

I am not on Medicaid and don't know crap about it. In CA it was considered welfare level stuff, last resort. I didn't even know it was federal? Or am I thinking MediCal? What a mess deep state has made, on purpose. I am out of this thread.

Cut GOVT fraud, theft and waste. DOGE all departments. Punish all criminals. It's gone on for too long.

Its been cut. Cut tax incentives for businesses now.
So take investment dollars from risk takers?... then who will pay for it and the rest of the government programs... squeeze the lemon too hard and the juice runs out faster...

Again....most Medicaid recipients already meet this requirement.....so...what is the problem the GOP is trying to fix?
Oh, there is a different spin. DrGlowStick says this will cause no end of suffering, while you say it won't do anything.

The problem is that even with those very easily met requirements, people like the Dr don't want to do it, but want to keep living large on my dime. He sees the gravy train ending, and wants to throw working people under it.
Yeah, there is no problem. This is just culling the low hanging fruit to give wealthy people and corps their big tax cuts...:(
You realize the "big tax cuts" are just a continuation of the same cuts that the Democrats let stay in when they had the House, the Senate, and the White House?

That bull. Neither taxes NOR labor wages are a reason to go overseas. Fake news.
You live in an alternative reality init. People who haven't reached your elevated age group actually have to wipe themselves. I know that has been a long time removed from your reality, but there it is.

Except..there's no "gravy train" for most of these people. There's just keeping their heads above water.

So are you for much higher wages for American workers making the same exact product here? I say double at a minimum but I'm ametica first. If its made in China for $10 at the very minimum $20 here.

Values of products are set by the marketplace, moron. You can make a 5 cent widget for your whole life and make a good living charging 20 cents for it. If you raise that price to $10, you'll starve. IDK why I'm trying to explain common sense to a senile fool, you haven't got the capacity to understand it.

Clearly there is for Phosphorous.
There's just keeping their heads above water.
This bill protects the truly needy, while giving incentive for those who can work to be productive.

Their self-worth will go up, and their mental states will be improved. How is that a bad thing?

Well well, Aren't you a special one unaffected? 10% laid off in CA was no laughing matter. 15 million nationwide. Many for years. Lost homes, families, divorces, suicides. Yes it was real.
GOVT flew to Copenhagen early on GW hogwash, raises, never missed a beat hiring 1000 per dat as we suffered. They just ran up debt.

According to the media millions died. Tens of thousands in nursing homes in secret during flu ctaze. Many at my work also found work from home. Most forced back in by last yr. I worked on site 100% everyday no mask. The equipment iI need to use is there. Commute was a breeze two years peaceful.
Life hang fair. Deal with it like the rest of us do.

Someone making your widget needs to be paid more than what you say the market calls for.

I understand that someone on long-term Medicaid would be nervous by any changes to a system that they have grown comfortable with.

An 80 hour work requirement per month does not look that odious to a typical non-welfare person. But I sure to a person comfortable chilling at zero hours per week for a couple of decades it looks impossible.

But, everyone with a job has changes at that job that they have to adjust to. Don't get me wrong, they often complain about those changes. They seem unfair, and pointless at times. But they are a fact of life.

Would anyone on Medicaid now believe that it would be more fair to require people who currently work full time to work an extra 80 hours per month to finance Medicaid at the funding level that allows recipients to never have to work?

It's America's destiny. Even divine intervention seems futile. :(

👉 The Medicaid cuts in the "One Big Beautiful Bill" (also called the Big Beautiful Bill) primarily reduce federal Medicaid spending by nearly $800 billion over 10 years, according to Congressional Budget Office estimates13. These cuts come through several mechanisms:👇

New work requirements: Beneficiaries must work or be in school for at least 80 hours per month to maintain coverage, with frequent eligibility reassessments every six months123. This particularly targets able-bodied adults who gained Medicaid coverage through the Affordable Care Act expansion3.

Increased administrative burdens: Paperwork requirements to prove compliance with work mandates could cause many people, including those with disabilities or caregiving responsibilities, to lose coverage unintentionally36.

Reduced provider taxes: Limits on state provider taxes used to fund Medicaid could reduce payments to hospitals and health providers, especially in rural areas14.

• Prohibiting Medicaid payments to Planned Parenthood for 10 years, limiting access to reproductive health care3.

• Delays or repeals of Biden-era enrollment and renewal rules, which would reduce coverage for children, seniors, and people with disabilities3.

• Reduced federal funding to states that cover undocumented immigrants in state-only programs, pressuring states to drop these programs and resulting in coverage losses for about 1.4 million people3.

Who benefits?

Republican lawmakers argue the bill benefits taxpayers by reducing "waste, fraud, and abuse" in Medicaid and saving money to sustain the program for the most vulnerable37.

The bill aims to reduce federal spending and deficit through budget reconciliation, which benefits fiscal conservatives and those prioritizing budget cuts12.

Who does not benefit?

An estimated 10.9 to 11.8 million people would lose health insurance by 2034 due to these Medicaid cuts, including many low-income adults, children, seniors, and people with disabilities23.

Rural areas, especially in Medicaid expansion states, would see significant reductions in Medicaid spending and enrollment, threatening hospitals and community health centers4.

Vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, young single mothers, people with chronic conditions, and immigrants would face coverage losses or reduced access to care34.

Health care providers, including rural hospitals and community health centers, could face financial strain or closures due to reduced Medicaid funding and limits on provider taxes34.

In summary, the Medicaid cuts in the One Big Beautiful Bill primarily benefit fiscal conservatives seeking budget reductions but would harm millions of Medicaid beneficiaries, health care providers, and vulnerable populations by reducing coverage, increasing administrative barriers, and threatening access to care12346.

This one is huge, and makes no damn sense whatsoever.

Sec. 112202. Disallowing premium tax credit in case of certain coverage enrolled in during special enrollment period.Current Law: Under current law, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has provided for a continuous special enrollment period available to individuals with a projected annual household income no greater than 150 percent of the federal poverty line.Provision: This provision prohibits individuals from receiving premium tax credits if they enroll in health coverage on the Exchange through a special enrollment period associated with their income.

Open enrollment for the ACA runs from November 1 to January 15 with coverage starting on January 1, or February 1 if you enroll after January 1. But hey, suppose you want to retire early, before Medicare. If you lose credible coverage, like an employer provided plan, you have a special enrollment period to sign up for an ACA plan. And you can qualify for a subsidy to help you pay the premium if you make less than 300% of the poverty level. Tell me, why would you refuse a premium tax credit simply because someone used a special enrollment period? I mean that is just asinine.
Final rules for 2026 although the 150% change might have already taken effect.
