Lafayette? This town was Lafayette until they changed it to Fayetteville. :D
There's a Lafayette or Fayetteville in just about every state, isn't there?! LOL!

Heres a few bits USA...I'm looking now for anything on the dock.
I'm feel sure slaves were sold at the Market, but I haven't found anything on how they got there, yet.

In Chesnutt's day, as in our own, the Market House was the "central feature" of Fayetteville ... Chesnutt never refers to the Market House as a place where slaves were sold ...
In memory and honor of those indomitable people who were stripped of their dignity when sold as slaves at this place. Their courage in that time is a proud heritage of all times. They endured the past so the future could be won for freedom and justice. Their suffering and shame afforded the opportunity for future generations to be responsible citizens, free to live, work, and worship in the pursuit of the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity. Thank you sweets!! I seen the first link, that was the only one I could find that mentioned slaves.
The 2nd one is on a plaque in the damn Market House, LOL, you'd think I'd read that, I was there last year Protesting war protestors, LOL!! They had yellow tape going down the center all the way through the MH, with us on one side and them on the other, it was great, LOL!! Since the MH is in the middle of an intersection, there's a circle all the way around it, 2 lanes going in the same direction, so cars and motorcycles would just go around in circles and start blowing their horns and cheering when they got to our side, so cool :D
Wonder why in all the flippin' sites I found about the Market House and the several time lines of our town that mentioned the MH being where produce was sold, why none mentioned the slaves?! My husband thinks it's because they're trying to save face, but most of those sites mentioned Fayetteville being the hot spot to buy slaves. Who knows.
Let me say, My family NEVER owned slaves!! They picked cotton themselves!!! :D

15th post
Well I actually drank a mug of coffee (equalling 2 cups) drowned in sugar and milk. Mercy, my hearts beating out of my chest, back to Pepsi for me, LOL! :D

I agree with your Husband. From all I've seen it appears that there is an effort to deny a piece of history. Can't do it though..I found a tax record from 1800s that listed the amount
of slaves people owned in the county and in what is now Fayetteville.

I don't doubt the river was used to bring slaves to Fay. but now I'm not sure about the dock.
It makes sense it would have been used to unload, being so close to the market, but I find it hard to believe that the local Gov. would not have preserved it either.

Tsktsk. That's not how you do it at all. :) You take one very large (3ish cups) travel mug, add 3 Splenda packets, and 2tbsp of half & half, and fill said mug with something flavored. (Cranberry Cream, and Vanilla Nut are the *best*)

You're probably on a sugar high. :D
