The insidious march of normalization.

You prefer cultural fascism?

Cultural authoritarianism is ruining a baker over a wedding cake, or a photographer over wedding photographs.

Cultural authoritarianism is foisting pride in public schools, not tolerance

Cultural authoritarianism is preventing speaking events by one side.

Donald Trump’s antagonism towards the press has become so well-established as to be unremarkable.

In a recurring bit, he gripes about some reporter or coverage he doesn’t like, gestures to the press pen at the back of his rallies and encourages his followers to boo the journalists. He sends out all-caps screeds about reporters who have wronged him, assigns them dehumanizing nicknames (see: Maggot Haberman), vows to jail those who don’t disclose their sources, threatens to revoke cable news stations’ broadcast licenses.

Trump has threatened the media more than 100 times in the past two months alone, according to an October Reporters without Borders report. As the report noted, these episodes rarely make the news.

This attitude has become a fixture for many on the right, including one of Trump’s most ardent and thin-skinned supporters: Elon Musk.

Last November, Musk sued Media Matters for America, a progressive watchdog-journalism hybrid that specializes in monitoring right-wing media. Days before, it had published a report showing advertisements from major companies on X (formerly Twitter) juxtaposed with neo-Nazi content that also appears on X. Musk filed his suit in the Northern District of Texas, home to an infamous right-wing judge who ideologically aligned plaintiffs often seek out.

USA: Trump verbally attacked the media more than 100 times in run-up to election

There is one and one reason only conservatives are fine with the idea trump should be able to control the media. Anything he does, including violating bedrock constitutional rights, is fine with them because...............Dear Leader.

Calling the media out for lying and propaganda isn’t threatening them

Moreover calling demafacist propagandist media is a in fact, undermining media

I think you're right about that. As I recall Obama would occasionally call out Faux for lying. But he never threatened to take Faux's broadcasting license away. And he never threatened to put reporters in jail.

Every time trump accuses the media of reporting "fake news" you can bet it's because it accurately reported some lie he told or law he broke.

Another way to put this is, there are simply no more standards at a national political level. A country cannot survive for long like that.

Which, of course, is what Trump advisor Steve Bannon has been pushing for.

Yup. Stevo doesn't like the rule of law for obvious reasons so he favors the dismantling of the "administrative state." An amorphous way of saying he wants chaos where might makes right.

What I keep thinking about is how the rubes are so angry and so manipulated that they think the destruction of our institutions might result in just a little inconvenience here and there.

Most of them don't understand what they're asking for. Do they not have families?

The insidious march for Democrats has been directly toward communism. In this election they are pullling out all the stops. To them, this was going to be the last fair election in our history. The rest would be Venezuela and Cuba style elections.

Forward thinking is not their strong suit..........nor is any kind of rigorous thinking.

As Election Looms, Disinformation ‘Has Never Been Worse’

The Democratic Party’s vice-presidential nominee has been falsely accused of sexually molesting students. The claims have been spread by a former deputy sheriff from Florida, now openly working in Moscow for Russia’s propaganda apparatus, on dozens of social media platforms and fake news outlets.

A faked video purporting to show one victim — creating fake people is a recurring Russian tactic — received more than 5 million views on X, a platform owned by the world’s richest man, Elon Musk. Mr. Musk has not only leaned all in for the Republican nominee, former President Donald J. Trump, but he also used his platform to reanimate discredited claims about the validity of the election’s outcome.

Smears, lies and dirty tricks — what we call disinformation today — have long been a feature of American presidential election campaigns. Two weeks before this year’s vote, however, the torrent of half-truths, lies and fabrications, both foreign and homegrown, has exceeded anything that came before, according to officials and researchers who document disinformation.

Disheartening doesn't begin to describe the feeling I get each time I see a trumple repeat a lie.

Well, many of them are provided their ideology and answers in church. Then they're provided the rest of their ideology and answers on MAGA media.

No intellectual curiosity required. It's all laid out for them. Critical thinking is actively discouraged in both venues.

Imagine what a different world we'd be living in if, rather than passively accepting the lies trumples are told, they spent time doing some fact checking. The obvious problem being they've been told to never trust any source other than the ones lying to them.

I was thinking about this. I have several disagreements with the left (see the link in my sig), but when I discuss them with the lefties, we're at least operating off the same set of facts most of the time.

With these folks, first I have to figure out what the hell they perceive as reality. If it's off in left field, I know there's no reason to continue, since there is simply zero intellectual elasticity. You can't get there from here.

I really don't think this American experiement can last with competing realities. Worse, that appears to be the plan.

Russia, as well as Iran and China, have gleefully stoked many of the narratives to portray American democracy as dysfunctional and untrustworthy. Politicians and influential media figures have in turn given foreign adversaries plenty of fodder to work with, inciting and amplifying divisiveness for partisan advantage.

“They do have different tactics and different approaches to influence operations, but their goals are the same,” Jen Easterly, the director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency in Washington, said in an interview, referring to foreign adversaries. “Very simply, they’re looking to undermine American trust in our democratic institutions and the election specifically, and to sow partisan discord.”

Foreign countries see an opportunity and are stepping through a door opened by the Orange Menace.

Couldn't agree more. As citizens we need to be making rational, informed decisions about our future for this experiment to survive. trumpery and RWM have put a halt to it.
