Actually Democrats were for re-settlement. Many blacks refused to leave. Whites who floated over here and were not the original inhabitants of this land did not have the right to tell anyone else to leave.

So, Democrats wanted to get rid of their slaves, but the slaves nixed the idea. That is not how history tells the story.
