Texas Sens. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, who represent the state where an 18-year-old gunman carried out one of the nation's deadliest school shootings last week, are among Congress' top recipients of contributions from pro-gun donors, campaign finance records show.
Cruz, in particular, has taken in the most money from pro-gun individuals and groups of anyone in the current Congress, amassing $442,000 over the course of his career, according to an analysis of disclosure reports by the nonpartisan campaign finance research group OpenSecrets.
Cornyn ranks third among current U.S. senators and representatives, receiving a total of $340,000 in contributions from pro-gun donors over his career, after Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., who has amassed $396,000, according to the analysis.

In Texas and beyond, many politicians receive mega donations from pro-gun supporters and lobbyists, and their dollars keep them in office.

In fact, our elections are flooded with emoluments given to Members of Congress, and that was made possible by a 5-4 decision in the Supreme Court.

A 5–4 majority of the Supreme Court sided with Citizens United, ruling that corporations and other outside groups can spend unlimited money on elections.

What was the rationale for the ruling?

In the court’s opinion, Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote that limiting “independent political spending” from corporations and other groups violates the First Amendment right to free speech. The justices who voted with the majority assumed that independent spending cannot be corrupt and that the spending would be transparent, but both assumptions have proven to be incorrect.
The senate has been fully politicized since the passage of the 17th Amendment which ended the appointment of Senators.

Cruz and Cornyn for the most part have represented the state well on gun rights since they each took office.

1. He had no problem illegally murdering 21 people, so why do you think he would have trouble illegally buying a gun?

2. How would penalizing someone for a “straw purchase“ after a mass shooting prevent that shooting?

3. I have never advocated for the mentally ill to have guns. You are making that up.
1. Because he was a loner according to his mom. Not many connections.

2. It would prevent future straw purchases. If someone sells a gun to someone who murders a bunch of people, then the seller goes to prison. The next would-be seller would think twice about who they’re selling to. Selling to some weird kid wouldn’t be worth the risk.

3. So how do you propose preventing people like Ramos from obtaining a gun? Let’s hear it.

They exist, and assholes like you call me a "hack-twit". The dollars and "presents" given to members of Congress from Corporations and the Gun Lobby are massive and dark money.
Every lobbying group that makes donations is identified.

Every individual or corporate donation is identified.

We have a right to the secret ballot so why would you object to "Dark Money"?

Every gun can be traced to the person who bought it from a licensed dealer.

You are full of shit. The abortion rights group protest in the streets, they are identifiable, gun advocates don't march and hide behind $$$ millions.

They had a giant meeting in Houston this week.

They hide?

And you think the only abortion rights groups are the ones marching? No "dark money" on their side?

Then why had ne not yet been adjudicated as mentally defective and rendered ineligible?
Because he wasn’t reported. Yet. Easy to sneak through the cracks when he wasn’t even going to school.

Give it more time and the probability that he gets flagged goes up.

Well that certainly isn't true. Over 200,000 of us were in Houston last week.

Ever notice all of the NRA and USCCA stickers on people's cars and pickups?

Let congress try to pass a national gun ban and you will see just how many of us are willing to turnout.

Giving it more time and the odds he ends up in the ER for a 5150 Review as well.

There's a lot of crazy, mentally unbalanced people running around the country with very few of them ever committing even a single murder much less a mass shooting.

Of course you disagree with them. They don’t follow the ridiculous connection that you insist on.

Your idea of keeping Americans safe is to allow psychotic 18-year-olds to purchase AR-15 rifles. What could possibly go wrong, right?
Why do you feel such a need to lie?

Nobody is advocating for psychotic 18yo's to be able to lawfully buy firearms. NOBODY.

Possibly. The guy was a loner, so it likely would have been difficult for him to obtain one illegally. Additionally, we need to heavily penalize people who participate in straw purchases
Horse shit all you need to do to find someone to sell you a gun illegally is find the local drug dealer who can always point you in the right direction. Many of them will themselves as they are not opposed to bartering dope for stolen guns.

Responsible gun owners shoudnt have a problem with checking if a person is crazy before selling them a gun because honestly it makes you look bad.
And responsible gun owners aren’t against that. However irresponsible liberals like the ACLU make it impossible to either confine mental ill people against their will or thanks to HIPPA laws make it difficult to impossible to put the mentally ill on the prohibitive to own lists.
