Detroit's problem was that it was a one-industry town. That being the manufacture of automobiles and automotive parts.

A lot of that business went to Japan and Germany. Oh, the Germans and Japanese have unions in their auto-makers, too. In fact, the Unions in Germany and Japan even have a say in who the CEO's are. CEO's who don't make 8 figures when their companies go bankrupt.

Cleveland is in the same boat that Detroit is in, and guess what, Republicans have run that city from time to time. Doesn't matter. When you move your industry out of the country, you are going to have large swaths of empty city.

The manufacturing industry left.
Why?
They left because the cost of doing business was high. Unions forced costs up, but even the union pay scales might not have led to Detroit’s decline, after all, other cities with union manufacturing have been in decline, but not the decline Detroit has seen. The difference is that city and state taxes as well as regulations and city codes in Detroit are higher than other states and cities. When the business left, the city didn’t reduce taxes, they increased them to keep up their benefits and infrastructure. As more businesses fled the high taxes and regulations of the state and city, the tax base crumbled and the infrastructure crumbled. Businesses didn’t leave because the infrastructure, parks, etc. became worse and were reduced. Businesses left because the costs of doing business would not support profits—they could simply make more money in another location.

I think you need to check your history.

FDR died in 1945. The communists didn't win until 1949. No one abandoned Chiang Kai-shek. In fact, billions were spent to prop him up. The only thing FDR did was emphasize that beating Japan was a little higher on the priority list than wiping out the last of Mao's forces.

Here's the dirty little secret about Chiang. The guy was a Nazi. In fact, he was such a fascist Hitler and Mussolini seriously considered inviting him to join the Axis instead of inviting Japan. Then they figured Japan was the better bet.

Also, like most Americans, you tend to overemphasize our importance. In fact, the Russians and the Chinese had a lot more to do with beating the Axis than we did.
