The Yankees are an iconic organization with the most success in pro sports history throughout their existence, no question.
However, since they've adopted the "Spend tons of cash, steal everyone else's players" strategy, trying to buy championships, they've been a dismal failure. Why do I say that? Let's go year by year:
(Year: Yankee payroll (rank of spending), Result of season)
2001: 112 million (1st). L World Series to Arizona 4-3
2002: 126 million (1st). L Divisional round to Anaheim 3-1
2003: 153 million (1st) L World Series to Florida 4-2
2004: 184 million (1st). L ALCS to Boston 4-3
2005: 208 million (1st). L Divisional round to LA Angels 3-2
2006: 195 million (1st). L Divisional round to Detroit 3-1
2007: 190 million (1st). L Divisional round to Cleveland 3-1

What a laughably horrible, inefficient, long list of choke jobs by a team that tried to buy their way into more Championships.
So many 1st round exits, so many gag jobs.. they are the biggest choke artists in sports history as far as the amount of resources they've spent and the results they've attained.
