The Choking Yankees: 23 Years of outspending and losing

The Yankees are an iconic organization with the most success in pro sports history throughout their existence, no question.

However, since they've adopted the "Spend tons of cash, steal everyone else's players" strategy, trying to buy championships, they've been a dismal failure. Why do I say that? Let's go year by year:
(Year: Yankee payroll (rank of spending), Result of season)

2001: 112 million (1st). L World Series to Arizona 4-3
2002: 126 million (1st). L Divisional round to Anaheim 3-1

2004: 184 million (1st). L ALCS to Boston 4-3
2005: 208 million (1st). L Divisional round to LA Angels 3-2

2014: 197 million (2nd). MISSED PLAYOFFS
2015: 218 million (2nd). L WC Game to Houston

2019: 204 million (3rd). L ALCS to Houston 4-2
2020: 108 million (1st). L Divisional round to Tampa 3-2
2021: 198 million (2nd). L WC Game to Boston
2022: 246 million (3rd). L ALCS to Houston 4-0
2023: 278 million (2nd). MISSED PLAYOFFS
2024: 297 million (2nd). L World Series to LA 4-1

What a laughably horrible, inefficient, long list of choke jobs by a team that tried to buy their way into more Championships.

So many 1st round exits, so many gag jobs.. they are the biggest choke artists in sports history as far as the amount of resources they've spent and the results they've attained.
thats the way it is with a lot of teams.....at least they make it to the playoffs....try being an angel fan....

I heard the Mets got him.

At least he stays in NY!

a third of the Yankees offense just left....the Mets just gained a lot of runs....without Soto the Yankees would not have won the division, with Soto the Mets would have been in the series....

Yeah but at least they aren’t loaded as the favorites, spending tons more than others, and still losing.

That’s what makes this stretch of failures impressive and remarkable

With what they spend and the players they get, they SHOULD make the playoffs. It’s notable if they don’t make it when spending $200 million.

It’s like giving a 7ft 3 inch person credit for being able to dunk a basketball. The Yankees get there because they should, and when they do, they choke in the playoffs over and over and over

you do know that other teams have some players as good as the yankees have and are very capable of getting hot and beating them.....the dodgers have choked a lot too...

You’re missing the point

Let me know when they get 20 more years of leading the league in spending and have no WS titles to show for it

It's what I loved about the 80's! All that history w/ all those players, it was a "lost decade" as The Yankees never even got to a World Series after '81 loss for 15 yrs.! The 1st thought that comes to mind is even when they became good again in the mid 90's, w/ a great class of players like Jeter, Mattingly, Boggs, Bernie Wms., & Strawberry, they still had to rely on some kid in the outfield interferring & helping them overcome the Orioles! :abgg2q.jpg: :dunno::stir:
