Cash for clunkers was a massive massive failure on many levels. The $4500 rebate was counted as income for tax purposes so people who couldn't afford it got stuck with huge tax bills. The ones who saw any benefit were the wealthy turning in the Lexus for Jaguars. But the real hurt was a by design. None of the cars traded in on the cash for clunkers program could be resold. They had to be crushed and sold as scrap. This hit the poor the hardest. Not only was the used car market destroyed but car parts were impossible to get. No more pick a part. Buy new.

How high do we need to make the wage to fulfill that basic need? Obviously we aren’t concerned whether or not someone can live off the wage. That’s their problem.”
