The Bible is the highest authority on most societal subjects. And while Biblical advice may seem simplistic to some the truth of it has stood the test of time.

There are many interpretations of how God wants us to treat those down and out,
You picked the verse MAGA chooses to follow.
Here is what good Christians follow.
Proverbs 14:31, which states that being kind to the needy honors God; Proverbs 19:17, which says being generous to the poor is like lending to the Lord; and Isaiah 58:7, which instructs to "share your bread with the hungry" and provide shelter for the homeless.
  • Proverbs 31:8-9: "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy".

This is not an easy question to answer

Poverty in ancient Israel was far different from poverty in 2025 America

The poor faced real death due to starvation 2,000 years ago

But now the poor have an obesity problem

Churches do those things and honor God by doing so. Do you expect government to follow God's commands? To do so would immediately bring shrieks of "THEOCRACY" from the usual suspects.

First, you need to define needy and hungry. When that was written, needy meant you were sleeping outside with the animals, maybe had one change of clothing and walked everywhere you went, hungry meant your ribs showed and you might not have eaten for several days.

In America today, needy is defined as having access to public transportation but not owning a car, having only one TV and full internet access in your living space, and multiple sets of clothing you can choose from. Hungry means you have access to enough calories per day that you are likely obese. No one objects to caring for the truly needy and hungry, they object to having money forcibly confiscated for those who can provide for themselves but choose not to do so.

Then define compassion and charity. Having money confiscated at gunpoint is not charity nor is it compassion.

All lovely quotes thst show why I no longer have anything to do with Christianity…. Stupidity in action.

There needs may be instructions on how to eat so you are not obese. Trump's obese.

And Please, there are millions of children and people throughout the world starving. Typical MAGA, you think god's world is the USA only.

So we're supposed to be a theocracy. Good to know.

Helping the needy is not a Christian thing, it is a moral thing.
Trump's administration and many followers lack morality.
You throw in some commonsense with morality, your questions can be answered.

I find helping anyone else to be stupid. It takes away from your own reserves which need to be maximized because when the shit hits the fan nobody else is going to be there or you.

I learned at a very early age thst nobody else is worried about your best interest but yourself, so you better not waste your time being worried about anyone else’s interests because they will not reciprocate.

Is it a moral thing to help the needy to the extent that the nation goes bankrupt?

If you use common sense and morality to prioritize, you do not go broke.
There are plenty of people who take from the government, even though they are not in need. That needs to be stopped. Those people are immoral. Those people include the poorest, the richest and everyone in between.

That's the crux of the matter, isn't it?

The verse I quoted deals with alcoholism and gluttony as eventual reasons for poverty. It's worse today with the addition of drugs. Too much booze and too much food screws up your body and your mind.

The verse I quoted simply shows how some people become poor, and that we should avoid them.

being kind to the needy honors God;
If Kenisha weighs 400 libs and needs an electric store cart that she loads up with sweets every week, giving her food stamps is anything but kind

She needs to go on a diet and get plenty of exercise

Poor eating habits account for most poverty. Hard to earn a living if you're sick all the time.

All the free food in American virtually guarantees that many will remain in poverty because of sickness caused by overeating.
