All organized religions involve an interpretation of some kind of literature, usually ancient. Christians have been killing for thousands of years, it was Christians who bombed Vietnamese villagers, Japanese peasants with atomic weapons, that cannot be reconciled with the sixth commandment unless one interprets that commandment - I do not need or want someone else to interpret God's word for me.

The founding document says the federal government must remain neutral in religious matters. My guess is Hawk doesn't want the government endorsing one religion over another. He recognizes legitimate government authority, but understands that the government has no legitimate authority to teach or prescribe religious teachings.
