For years, decades really, I've been arguing with liberals who seemingly want every important social function regulated, controlled or outright owned by the government. In general my objections are dismissed as reactionary complaints from a "stingy conservative" - but that's not it. Never was.

My comments, always ignored, centered on the folly of putting these services at the mercy of an election. If the government controls education, healthcare, welfare, etc ... then education, healthcare, welfare, etc .. are subject to the political winds. They are at risk every time a new administration takes over. We're seeing it unfold now.

Maybe liberals will learn something from all this.

It is simple. The reason Democrats created all these programs is because they believe in using the government to fight the culture war. They think they can use the power of the state to make people better. But they fail to consider that "better" is entirely subjective, and that when others take the reigns they'll use the power, that Democrats created, to push us in a different direction.

The only way to keep the other side from ramming its values down your throat is to remove the government's ability to dictate societal norms in the first place, so that neither side can use it to force their idea of the "good life" on the rest of us. The government should protect our freedom to create the kind of society we want, voluntarily, collaboratively - without resorting to the force of law to get our way.

You can see DOGE is finding waste. And there is more. They are not using a scalpel, yet they are not going full speed ahead either. We also have state, local and city governments. That is the sad thing of if we ever have full national health insurance. The waste will be epic. And people ruin it for themselves.
