U.S. Consumer Confidence Drops to Three-Decade Low Amid Economic Headwinds

Confidence among U.S. consumers plunged in August to the lowest level since May 1980, adding to concern that weak employment gains and volatility in the stock market will prompt households to retrench.

The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan preliminary index of consumer sentiment slumped to 54.9 from 63.7 the prior month. The gauge was projected to decline to 62, according to the median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey.

The biggest one-week slump in stocks since 2008 and the threat of default on the nation’s debt may have exacerbated consumers’ concerns as unemployment hovers above 9 percent and companies are hesitant to hire. Rising pessimism poses a risk household spending will cool further, hindering a recovery thatFederal Reserve policy makers said this week was already advancing “considerably slower” than projected.

“The mood is very depressed,” said Chris Christopher, an economist at IHS Global Insight Inc. in Lexington,Massachusetts. “Consumers are very fatigued and very uncertain. In the short term, people are going to pull back on spending.”

Estimates of 69 economists for the confidence measure ranged from 59 to 66.5, according to the Bloomberg survey. The index averaged 89 in the five years leading up to the recession that began in December 2007.

Haven't seen such low confidence since JIMMY CARTER. And we all remember what happened to Jimmy Carter, don't we liberals?:lol::lol:

And the liberal media gives us loaded poll after loaded poll telling us that the Tea Party is sinking. That the public really wants to do what Obama wants?

Keep on deluding yourselves liberals. You think the country is with a president who has managed the economy this badly and then goes on a spree of blaming everyone else but himself?

Keep on deluding yourselves liberals.

2012 is coming!

Notice, liberals don't want to talk a lot about or contribute to threads about Obama's bad record?

Why? Because the marching orders have gone out. They know they LOSE and LOSE BADLY if they try to defend loser Obama.

So the orders have gone out. SMEAR, ATTACK, FLAME anyone challenging Obama. That's the strategy. Try to destroy his enemies.

That's the only thing they have. Notice the threads that are starting lately just flailing at anything that comes near Obama. They are about both the Tea Party, Republicans running, AND EVEN POSTERS BY NAME on USMB.

That's all liberals have.

And don't expect it to get better. They are going to become more and more rage filled and desperate as the election looms closer.

2012 is coming!

Voter confidence in the future of the country has returned to the lowest levels found in nearly five years of surveys.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 32% of Likely U.S. Voters think America’s best days are in the future, down from 37% in June. Just over half (51%) say the nation’s best days are in the past, while 17% are not sure.

Mr. Hopey Changey is making it clear that the change he is giving us, is for the worse. FAR worse!
