Tariffs, how they actually work

No one is forced in China.

China benefits from it's slave labor with lower labor costs. From the link:

"Forced Labor

China has a long history of imposing forced labor on Uyghurs in Xinjiang. Researchers have documented a network of factories being built within and near detention camps in Xinjiang. Leaked government documents reveal that working in these factories is often a condition for release from the camps. Uyghurs have no real choice but to work in these factories, often for low or no wages. Uyghurs are also being transferred in large groups to work at factories throughout China. This further isolates them from their families and community. Academics have suggested that the system of forced labor and the separation it causes may be part of the government’s effort to fully assimilate the Uyghurs into the Han majority culture by breaking their traditional cultural bonds."

You can buy everything you wear or have in your home made in America already. You don’t. Because you don’t want to pay the price. You don’t need a tariff to buy American at high prices if you want to pay high prices.
Historically, high tariffs have been associated with negative long-term consequences such as reduced economic output, increased unemployment, and disrupted global supply chains.

Most of Trump's tariffs are not approved by congress and some are being overthrown by the courts. So when the president leaves office, many of these tarrifs will leave with him. This is why you will not see a significant number business building new plants to escape Trump tariff's.

Americans will buy more American products. BTW, why doesn't say....Japan buy American cars? There are high tariffs on American products in many countries as well. Why don't they drop the tariffs on American products? Tariffs help American manufacturers. Why do you accept high tariffs on American goods?

Japan doesn't have tariffs on American cars. (At least prior to the present Administration, don't know what may have happened since the President started tariff wars.)

#1 Japanese - in general - want predomently Japanese cars because they see them as higher quality.

#2 Japanese - in general - don't want the models of cars that American car manufactures offer. Typically smaller cars with smaller engines. In any type of developed location parking is a serious problem.

#3 The standards for Japanese cars are different and to retool American models for sale there would add significant costs, pricing them out even further.

I was stationed in Japan for 4 years and my daughter is currently stationed there. The military is currently storing her car for her. It would have cost $6000-8000 to get the car modified to get the Japanese certifications. The military would ship it at no cost to her, so that isn't even part of the factor.

Only if you're unfamiliar with the entirety of the history of International Trade and just focus on the exceptions rather than the rule.

Naw, once in place those tariffs will likely be enduring, if there is one thing American Politicians on both sides of the aisle LOVE is new sources of federal revenue that coincidentally come attached to talking points regarding "protecting American Jobs".

The Democrats are yet again taking the 20% side of an 80/20 issue by essentially arguing "We want to protect Foreign Jobs", watch the tune change if/when a Democrat POTUS gets elected, just like Biden did by keeping Trump v1.0 tariffs in place.

Democrats lie that tariffs are a tax on Americans. Not true.

Most of the tariffs are paid by the importers, not the consumers, and as you say, if you buy American there is no tariff.
Democrats have no ideas, no leadership, and no honesty whatsoever. No REAL American should support them. These are not your Daddy's Democrats. Not even close.

Japan has had and continues to have non-tariff barriers to U.S. made Auto's including safety and testing standards and right hand drive that lead to very high homologation costs for U.S. manufacturers to import products there.

Doesn't really matter though, given the preferences of Japanese consumers and the driving condition constraints in Japan, U.S. autos don't fit the market there and will likely never gain any significant market penetration, it's not like the Japanese want (or will ever want) huge pickup trucks and SUVs that U.S. manufacturers love the margins on so much, they're impracticable for the driving conditions.

Doesn't really matter though since the Japanese market is not something U.S. manufacturers have been focused on for a VERY long time.

Ah contraire, the Democrats have plenty of ideas and leadership.

Unfortunately for the Democrats all of them are idiotic and unpopular.

Trump imposed a reciprocal 15 % tariff on Japan.

Trump imposed a reciprocal 15 % tariff on Japan.

Trump imposed a “reciprocal “ tariff on an island that was (a) populated by penguins, and (b) didn’t have a US import tariff anyway.

Multiple choice question! When the goods arrive, who pays the tariff fees?

A. The exporting company (Chinese, Korean, whatever)
B. The importing company (American employer)
C. Elvis (Currently dead)

There's just one correct answer! Take your guess!
The manufacturers and sellers pay the tariff by lowering their prices. China devalued its currency to offset the tariffs. Thats why inflation slowing, GDP rose to 3.8% and tariffs are bringing in 1 trillion a year. That will pay off the deficit in 2 years.
Wages are up more than inflation and middle class tax cuts have increased the spending power of the working class.
So fat Trumps economy is working

Well, yes, and often to compete the importer will absorb the tax, if they cant they will pass it on…like any other tax…but what is true, unlike the taxes Dems support like higher corp tax rates, consumers can decide not to pay it, by buying American

In the real world price elasticity is a thing. The math tells you that you will be more profitable raising your price and selling less than to eat the cost. That’ s how we decide in the real world.
I guess it depends but let’s look at Louis Vuitton with an estimate worth of $300 billion v WalMart with an estimated value of nearly 900 billion

Which is worth more?

There is a reason Jim Jones was a Dem and involved deeply with the Dem party

Tariffs are a fee put on foreign products imported into the US for sale to Americans. Their purpose is to help american producers compete with cheap foreign goods. they do not increase the price of american goods sold in america. If you insist on buying Chinese goods you will pay a tariff. The way to avoid that is to buy american made products.

For example: Italy puts a 100% tariff on Harleys sold in Italy. Why? so Italians will buy Italian motorcycles. its simple and it works. It amazes me how the left is unable to understand this simple concept. Foreign countries have been putting tariffs on american goods for years. Trump is merely doing the same thing to them.

If you hate tariffs, the fix is simple: Buy American.
This is a rather simplistic view you have, and has not been born out by reality.

". . . Suppose we tax imports of French and Italian wine. As a result, demand for California wine rises, and producers in Napa and Sonoma expand production to meet it. Here’s the key point: expanding production without increasing costs is difficult, especially so for any big expansion in normal times.

To produce more, wine producers in Napa and Sonoma need more land. But the most productive, cost-effective land is already in use. Expansion forces producers onto less suitable land—land that’s either less productive for wine or more valuable for other purposes. Wine production competes with the production of olive oil, dairy and artisanal cheeses, heirloom vegetables, livestock, housing, tourism, and even geothermal energy (in Sonoma). Thus, as wine production expands, costs increase because opportunity costs increase. As wine production expands, the price we pay is less production of other goods and services.

Thus, the fundamental reason domestic prices rise with tariffs is that expanding production must displace other high-value uses. The higher money cost reflects the opportunity cost—the value of the goods society forgoes, like olive oil and cheese, to produce more wine.

And the fundamental reason why trade is beneficial is that foreign producers are willing to send us wine in exchange for fewer resources than we would need to produce the wine ourselves. Put differently, we have two options: produce more wine domestically by diverting resources from olive oil and cheese, or produce more olive oil and cheese and trade some of it for foreign wine. The latter makes us wealthier when foreign producers have lower costs. . . "
