If you guys were serious about stopping illegal immigration, here's what you should do.

1) Establish a biometric national ID so that we know who everyone who is supposed to be here is.

2) Put the focus of ICE on workplace enforcement, with stiff fines for people caught hiring the undocumented. (And that should include people who hire nannies or a truckload of day laborers at the Home Depot)

3) Establish a guest worker program to address the legitimate needs of unskilled labor, with an understanding that the visa will only apply to the worker and not his family.

4) address the economic issues in the countries that these people are coming from. Take Venezuela. We spent 20 years trying to wreck their economy because they picked a form of government we don't like, and then acted all surprised when hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans showed up at our doorstep.

5) Adequately staff the immigration and asylum courts so that cases are litigated quickly (which is actually what the law requires!) if someone know that it will take 7 years for their case to be heard, that's a big incentive to come here and just take your chances.
