Sun Tzu was a Chinese general, military strategist, writer and philosopher who lived in the Eastern Zhou period of ancient China. Sun Tzu is traditionally credited as the author of The Art of War, an influential work of military strategy that has affected both Western and East Asian philosophy and military thinking.

The good fighters of old first put themselves beyond the possibility of defeat, and then waited for an opportunity of defeating the enemy.

All warfare is based on deception.

The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.

Hence to fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting.

Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.

Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.

Opportunities multiply as they are seized.

There is no instance of a nation benefitting from prolonged warfare.

The opportunity to secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

The book has also become popular among political leaders and those in business management. Despite its title, The Art of War addresses strategy in a broad fashion, touching upon public administration and planning. The text outlines theories of battle, but also advocates diplomacy and the cultivation of relationships with other nations as essential to the health of a state .

And this is exactly the problem. Both fringes are convinced they're in a "war".

No rules. Lots of collateral damage. The ends justify the means. We'll do or say anything to "defeat" our "enemy".

The fringes are killing us.

Personally I'm more partial to Clausewitz...

"The political objective is the goal, war is the means of reaching it, and means can never be considered in isolation from their purpose. Therefore, it is clear that war should never be thought of as something autonomous but always as an instrument of policy."

This relates to Wuhan Virus...the lockdown is the war...the political aim is saving lives...losing sight of the objective is destroying the economy which will also cost lives and establishing authoritarianism, which in the long run historically has cost lives.
