Study: Free birth control leads to fewer abortions; Romney wants to cut access.

"It is my view that no American woman should be denied access to family planning assistance because of her economic condition.… This we have the capacity to do”

“We need to make population and family planning household words. We need to take sensationalism out of this topic so that it can no longer be used by militants who have no real knowledge of the voluntary nature of the program but, rather are using it as a political stepping stone. If family planning is anything, it is a public health matter”. ~ George HW Bush

Title X funding passed 298 to 32 in the House and passed the Senate unanimously.

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Now you're quoting Bush? com'on, seriously?

Where does it say, taxes should be used so people can have all the sex they want since we gave them free birth control? or even anything like it?
Rubbers were standard issue during world war 2 and the end of world war 1 to the military.... That certainly was tax payer's money funding it.

To protect their rifles during water landings under fire.

few used them for the actual purpose.

Firstly, Nixon was a corrupt assclown.

Secondly, no one's saying they should be denied access... just that we shouldn't have to pay for it. You want it, you pay for it.

That Nixon was a criminal doesnÂ’t mitigate the accuracy of this statement.

For many, itÂ’s defense spending and corporate welfare, every taxpayer ends up paying for something he doesnÂ’t like or support.

Were they standard issue to the military, or to college and high school kids?
what's the difference? The PURPOSE is the same. The door was opened with funding the military men with them....

Are you actually equating giving men, how signed up for war, with people who are just to dumb to say; "not now, I don't have protection."?

I was in the Navy.

So I know you're full of shit about "handing them out".

and, nobody liked them b/c they were not lubricated.

But you could get them.

"free" is a stretch, since our pay sucked.

Sucks to be you, squid. You joined the wrong seagoing service. I did hand them out, and had another jar put in male berthing. You can do that sort of thing when your're lead Chief on a Coast Guard Cutter. Oh, and we had lubricated Trojans.

I got to "date" actual French, Italian, Greek, Israeli, English, Spanish, chicks and you didn't.

Your initial response to my post consisted of basically calling me a liar so it's a little late to get your feelings hurt about being called a squid.

Shallow water sailors, Uncle Sam's Confused Group...trust me, you can't come up with one I haven't heard. Doesn't change the fact that the Navy and the CG were two completely different services (The Coast Guard has been around longer) so your calling bullshit on something you have no knowledge about is where the bullshit falls.

No trips too far abroad, I only got as far as Aruba Cuba Haiti, Guam and Jamaica. Fishing and swimming were great tho.

Who do you think was visiting y'alls wives while you were screwing hairy European gals? ;)

yeeaahh

Quoting Tricky Dick, now that's funny.

and

No one is denied, you can go to any store and buy condoms.

Not even CLOSE.

The military's obligation is to maintain the ranks in a fighting capacity. Men suffering form STDs aren't capable of fighting. They are sick. No one cared overmuch that our military was around the world creating unintended pregnancies. Historically, no nation ever took an interest in the unintended pregnancies caused by military.

We feed our military, that's our obligation. They are in service to the nation, they deserve it. Compare that to the youth, who sees their service to the nation as binge drinking, indiscriminate ******* and a certain pass on their failing grades and there is no comparison. Democrats might be taking the concept of equality too far.

Were you in Conn, say '85-87 or 93-95? we may have shared someone. :D

uhhhh, the point being is that government has been paying for birth control/and safe sex via rubbers for quite some time....

You would think that grown men in the military are adults and can utilize their own self control....but I guess not.

It opened the door to the gvt funding birth control and safe sex. The only difference now regarding gvt funding birth control is that it is women you are concerned with and not men... So Why should my tax dollars go towards grown military men f-ing around, war or not?

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with the gvt funding military men with condoms, just wondering why it is okay for the gvt funding the goose, but not the gander?

In the early 80s I was just a few states over in NY and NJ. Used to cut through CT on my way to a nice little filly in RI. I stayed away from married women. My shipmates didn't, but I did.

I tend to think that what has happened to Conservatives has happened to Libeals at least on the top of the table.

Look at the pair we have running for office. Obama came from humble beginnings; no dobut. Apparently, he excelled in his studies, went to Harvard, worked in the community, the state legislature, the Congress, then the Presidency. Not saying it's been a day at the beach for him but its doubtful he's taken an unsure breath in two decades. Governor Romney was born in to wealth and affluence and, to his credit, maintained both. It is possible he's never taken that unsure breath. Even the supposedly "endearing" stories his wife tells smack of it; "We had to sell stock to get by."

The problem isn't Obama and the problem isn't Romney. The problem is that our professional politicians have become stratified to the point to where the path doesn't go through public service as it used to. The public service introduces the future politician to what actual sacrifice is taking place. Through that understanding, you earn a respect for what people do to make ends meet. Both candidates acknowledge the need for the social safety net but I doubt either one understand how delicate the threads of that net are.

One could extrapolate this out to the softness we have as a society but that softness has always been such to a degree.

Because the military and the public is not equal. We feed the military, there is no mess hall for the public. We arm the military, there is no armory for the public. We tell the military where to go and when. The public doesn't get deployment orders.

Oh, horseshit. The crazy Religious nutbags would ban all birth control and abortion if they could get away with it.

Carping about who pays for it is just all they are allowed to do.

Again, a simple solution. Have an extra page on the 1040, and let people check off which controversial programs they want to subsidize.

I'm willing to bet you "full funding for planned Parenthood" gets more check marks than, "20 billion in oil subsidies for the oil companies."

Conservatives are not interested in ‘reducing’ teen pregnancy; that would require acknowledging facts, cooperation, and an open mind.

Conservatives are only interested in compelling others to conform to rightist social dogma. In this case ‘absence only’ is their ‘solution.’

Indeed, most conservatives adhere to the fallacy that providing contraceptives free of charge to young people would condone and facilitate teen sex.

ItÂ’s tragic many citizens must suffer as a consequence of conservative ignorance and stupidity.

At the end of the day, it is the woman's responsibility to be responsible for her body. That being said, we all pay for the irresponsibility. We can pay a little now or a lot more later on.

So explain to me why we are paying so much more now that abortion is legal and birth control is available to all...

then we were in 1971?

Inflation has affected everything...I'm not sure what the context of "so much more" is.
I will say that the Title X funding is $300M. That comes from Governor Romney's website. He wants to eliminate it. That $300M is the equivalent of $1 in taxes from each citizen. The Title X funding goes to an exclusive subset of the population so measuring it against the macro is hard to formulate.

Logically looking at it though; doesn't it make sense that fewer kids translate into fewer public resources having to be spent in maintaining the kids?

Governor Romney says, again on his website, that it will cut off funding to "abortion groups" like Planned Parenthood; apparently he feels that the cutting off the funding will lead to fewer abortions. No taxpayer monies go to abortions now--by law. The cutting of the funding will lead to more pregnancies obviously. More pregnancies will lead to more abortions. That is a given.

It might make sense if it were true.

But it obviously isn't true. There are more unwanted children, more cases of child abuse and neglect, more single parent families, more money spent on welfare since the advent of legalized abortion and free birth control. Kindly stop perpetuating the lie that free birth control and abortion can prevent any of those things, when the fact is, they lead directly to an increase in all.

I'll tell you what... As a 20 year sailor, I was sure thankful for the free condoms provided by the US Government. It kept a whole lot of my shipmates safe during port calls...which is why I stood at the prow handing them out.

(they also made great balloons for impromptu parties)

Now, see, if they put the beneficiaries of 'free' bc, I might have less to complain about. They could set up a government run whore house. That way, the gals could help pay down the cost of their 'free' birth control. Hell, might even cut down on the prison population by decreasing the rate of rapes.

And the free ones worked how much better then the ones they could buy for themselves?

Yes they did. They actually took the free ones...but never bothered to buy them.

I was a radioman that used to work at a communications station copying messages from merchant and military ships. I can't tell you how many HMO messages I copied that had to do with male members having some sort of oozing sore...

Why buy them if someone's handing them out for 'free'.

No taxpayer monies go to abortions now--by law. The cutting of the funding will lead to more pregnancies obviously. More pregnancies will lead to more abortions. That is a given.

Today, the Title-X-funded network serves over five million people each year in more than 4500 sites, serving as many patients' usual and even only source of health care. According to the Guttmacher Institute, family planning services at Title-X-funded health centers helped prevent 973,000 unintended pregnancies in 2008, which would likely have resulted in 432,600 unintended births and 406,200 abortions. Title-X-funded services produce significant cost savings to the federal and state governments; services provided at Title-X–supported clinics accounted for $3.4 billion in such savings in 2008 alone. When all 2008 public funds are taken into account, more than $5 billion in public funds were saved — for every public dollar invested in family planning care, nearly $4 in Medicaid expenditures were averted.

Despite the benefit to the public health and the public purse, Title X appropriations have not grown with the need for subsidized care. The program has been chronically underfunded by both Democratic and Republican administrations — if appropriations had kept up with inflation since FY 1980, the program would be funded at $840.1 million rather than the FY 2010 funding level of $317.5 million. Put another way, funding for Title X in constant dollars (i.e., taking inflation into account) is 62% lower today than it was 30 years ago.
