Emergency services and gardai are at the scene of "a serious public order incident " in the capital - here's what we know so far.
The incident happened on Parnell Square East, shortly after 1.30pm on Thursday. Gardai have described the incident as a 'standalone attack' and are 'satisfied no terror activity'.

Five casualties have been taken to various hospitals in the Dublin Region. The casualties include an adult male, an adult female and three young children

The Irish Independent reports that he is an Irish citizen who, while not born in the country, had lived there for a number of years. Detectives are said to be following a line of inquiry that he may have suffered a 'psychotic episode' prior to the attack.
The attacker was reportedly struck in the face with a motorcycle helmet.
Police chiefs say 'far-right' thugs are responsible for the civil unrest that followed; prolific social media accounts associated with the far-right have made as-yet-unsubstantiated claims that the attacker is an 'immigrant'.
Michael D. Higgins, the president of Ireland, has hit out at rioters, accusing them of weaponising the attacks in a 'reprehensible' manner.
He said: 'All of our thoughts are with each of the children and their families affected by today's horrific attack outside Gaelscoil Colaiste Mhuire in Dublin city centre.

I don't know why but this description triggered a memory I cannot get out of my mind from a haunting attack that occured maybe 15 or 16 years ago. An immigrant in London chased down a British soldier (in his fatigues) in broad daylight and slashed him to death with a machete for no reason. All caught on cellphone camera as the soldier laid dead on the streets. The attacker was full of blood and you could hear sirens in the background. A British woman calmly reasons with the man, "why did you do that?" and he just says "he is killing my people" and arguing with this lady as he is full of this dead mans blood. It was the realization that we are dealing with some crazed barely human beings. It could have been anyone. Competitive nations want immigrants, but the RIGHT immigrants. Furthermore, they need to adapt to their new country not vice versa. Maybe this Irish person was just insane. He might not even be an immigrant. Western citizens have to wake up though.
