A charity that helps Irish women pay for abortions in Britain said it had received a large increase in donations since a 21-year-old Northern Irish woman was given a suspended sentence for terminating a pregnancy using abortion pills.
The Abortion Support Network is a charity based in England that helps women from the Republic and the North cover the costs of travel, accommodation and an abortion in Britain. Women in Northern Ireland are not entitled to access abortions through Britain’s national health service and must pay for the procedure.
Unlike the rest of the UK, abortion is illegal in Northern Ireland.
