Of course they had to be escorted by an East German while there, and their East German guide decided to join them when they went back to West Germany. Wrong, what that looks like to me is not a failure of capitalism but instead the failure of local gov't. Most likely a gov't run by democrats. Capitalism offers prosperity, a lot more than any other economic model, but it does not guarantee it.

It didn´t collapse. But it may have in the future. However, the new Germany didn´t take the opportunity to invest in existing GDR companies. Computer-production, ect. The GDR lacked of cash and often the possibility to invest and buy foreign technology - that the new Germany had but they refused and destroyed all the GDR´s achievements.
