Social Security Disability

I'm confused then. I know of. 20 year old who claims she's getting 1000K a month and will get. Another 600 when her baby is born in a few weeks. She's never worked.

She is probably getting SSI (Supplemental Security Income). People that are not eligibl;e for disability benefits usually apply for that. But I don't think it's a lot of money.

According to DSHS the minute a girl gets pregnant she can start collecting welfare.

Not in Oregon. She doesn't get to receive any money until she's in her ninth month.

My neighbor is on it and is proud to be on it. She proudly displays her free car tag and parks in the handicapped spot every time she can.
She is on social security disability and there is not a dam thing wrong with her. She also proudly displays her conservative opinions on bumper stickers on her Denali.
This program is the fastest growing Federal program out there.
My neighbor rides horses, cuts grass on the rider and has a garden to kill for.
There is a special place in HELL for people like her.
And nothing will or can be done to stop the checks. $2200 a month in her case.

You should report her. There's nothing wrong with being a whistle-blower in cases like that. Social Security is so short-staffed they can barely keep up with servicing people legitimately on SS, SSD and SSI, let alone monitor potential fraud perpetrated by each individual. In the past, I've reported people that I knew were not eligible for Medicaid or any of the other State-sponsored family subsidies, and the results were immediate. They can't act unless they are aware of such problems.

That said, SSI is a program that never, EVER should have been attached to Social Security. It's one of the reasons that entitlement program is so drained of funds. The only saving grace is that it is extremely difficult to qualify for. Often even if someone is legitimately entitled, he needs to get a disability attorney involved. BUT, once they are on SSI, many slackers continue to collect even though they are no longer disabled. For that reason, again, you should notify your local office (anonymously of course). At least you'll have the personal satisfaction that you tried to do something instead of just complaining on a message board.

SSI as a 'drain' on the Social Security Trust Fund is a common misconception. The monthly payments made to folks receiving SSI comes from the General Treasury, not the SSA Trust Fund. Folks who didn't work much, or didn't report all of their FICA wages to avoid the tax, and end up relying on SSI to bring their retirement benefit up to $674 actually get 2 checks - one on the 1st of the month for SSI and another on the 3rd for SSA.

The only real danger to the fund at this moment in time is that We allowed ourselves to borrow most of it. It is a pretty little collection of I.O.U.'s - the question We, The People have to ask ourselves is "Do We trust Us?

Well I spoke with someone close to the family today and she said all six of them are on SSI and are "disabled". Aside from one child with Downs, the other three kids are merely victims of their circumstances. Most likely learning disabled from lack of school attendance. 600 x 6 isn't a whole lot of money, but they may be getting other assistance as well. With no expenses, that's not poverty.

On a side note - she went to the hospital yesterday and has been put on bed rest. The baby isn't due for 6 weeks. This one may be "disabled" as well. Too many cigarettes and energy drinks perhaps.

Who cares if it is not enough to "live on"?
The woman up the road lives in a 900K home.
Just because someone is poor gives them no right to my $.
Disabled means not able to walk in my book.
No wonder we are going broke. Everyone wants a check for some family member that is too lazy to work.

SSI is for people who have been deemed incapable of supporting themselves due to a disability. Sometimes it's because they're mentally retarded, or mentally ill. The rest of the time, it's a physical disability.

There are people who work at being determined disabled. These people don't really have anything wrong with them except their weird mindset that makes them think it will be cool to be disabled. Which is probably in and of itself some sort of mental illness. I haven't met one person like that that I would call normal, or even remotely like normal.

That's got to be a state program up there in the Evergreen State - the federal government has yet to declare 'pregnancy' a disability, and unless you get knocked up after age 65, you have to be disabled to get SSI.

That is so sad... We should help families as a unit get 'back on their feet' instead of feeding a cycle of getting declared 'permanently disabled'. How the hell can kids pursue their dreams if their parents and the state keep telling them that they're "disabled"?

Actually there are things that can be done to stop it. Get a camera, take a few shots and head down to your local social security office.

OH and there are plenty of people on ss disability who really should be and I for one applaud the program. Its a very difficult thing to get on, and they screen very very meticulously. you go before a judge, with your lawyer and a occupational specialist of some sort.

I live in CA and it is extremely hard to get permnanent disability here. I've known people that really needed it and people that did not. Nobody gets it on the first try. They get a letter telling them that they have to file for a reconsideration. After that is denied, they go before a judge. It's a very lengthy and tiring process. Seeing their doctors and doing all the paper work!!

I'm surprised you neighbor was able to get it. I could be wrong. But I think they do a good job here of weeding out the deatbeats!!!

I seriously doubt his claim that nothing is wrong with his neighbor. The process is lengthy and yes some people slip through the cracks. But it is not 50 percent. Further they review the cases every few years with a different doctor involved.

By the way the claim that somehow Conservatives are the dead beats is hilarious. Social Security is a system every working person pays into their entire working career. To claim that somehow conservatives should not use said system when they qualify is ignorant as hell. Regardless of whether or not they believe the system should exist or not.

OMG, I agree with you. Serioulsy, something is wrong here. Great post.

Actually what ever my doctors wrote and the 8 or so hospital visits I had, my request was approved on the first request. The VA also increased my disability to 70 percent paid at the 100 percent level because I am unemployable.

My sons are autistic. Andrew, my youngest and lowest functioning, can work, in fact wants to work but he is non-verbal and has toilet training issues at 22 years old so they won't let him have a job, even a non paying job. I work my butt off to find things for him to do, he folds clothes, he can pull weeds, etc., but he needs constant supervision. I'm 53 years old, what happens when I'm gone? You gonna put him out of your misery? He sure as heck isn't going to be able to live on the $400 a month that ssi gives him now.

David is my oldest, he was 21 before I decided to apply for ssi for him. The department of vocational rehabilitation having spent 3 years failing to find him a job. Now he's going to DeVry and has $thousands in student loans to pay off, but he's on the Dean's list and it's my hope when he graduates, he will become a function member of society. His social skills are still a problem and will follow him wherever he goes, but he's smart, hopefully smart enough to work around that.

Because of my back, there are certain jobs I can't do, more, my job that I could do was sent to India. I am not collecting ANYTHING for myself. I'm still looking for a job, though it is difficult as I still have to care for Andrew and he can't be left alone. You ever try finding a babysitter for a 22 year old man that's still in diapers?

I begged for help from the state and only when I threatened to drop my son off at his counselor's office did I get any help at all. Now a caregiver comes in 5 days a week for a few hours. Funny thing is, first the counselor said we'd be brought up on child abandonment charges...I pointed out that our son is over 21 and that we haven't filled out the paperwork to become his guardians yet. Boy that changed his tune. Now I'm not sure we'll ever fill out the paperwork to become his guardians.

As for it being "your" money......We've paid our share of taxes as have all the other people in our family including my parents. None of us has ever collected welfare, my kids are the first in our family to ever get disability, and they didn't collect a dime until they were 19 and 22. The rest of my sibling's children all have gone on to college and have great jobs, two of them have their own kids....I don't know why I had the one's with autism.

Sticks and stones Gunny. I have been beat up, shot at, left for dead. No worries.
What worries you?
We work for our $ here and do not like folks that can walk with no mental disabilities getting a dam cent of our $. Might be different in your area as liberals love passing out cash.
America is full of wannabe conservatives these days.
When it comes to collecting a check for a minor ailment sucking on the government tit either you are a solution to the problem or you are the problem.Which is it Gunny?
Govern yourself accordingly.

As long as a doctor declares them disabled you could have them diving doing flips and it does no good.
The doctors are the problem.

How old is your neighbor? What is her disability? Did she not pay into the system first? Hell my 70 year old parent also have a disabled sticker on their vehicle and mom is still fairly active but she does have a few limitations. Dad get SS and his pension you going to bitch about him getting a few years earlier when he was diagnose with a 5% percent chance of survival from cancer he got while working at a nuclear facility too? I just don't see enough info in your post to get all round up about.

I am on social security disability. I'd love to collect the $2200.00 a month you say your neighbor is collecting. I doubt very seriously that your neighbor is collecting more than about $1550.00 a month. I'm 58 and will not live to be 62 or 65 to collect on the social security I paid into all of my working career. I have one of those medical conditions that may allow you to live for 5 years or so or it just might cause your death 5 minutes from now. Who can tell about those things except for God. I did not require a lawyer to get my claim for Social Security Disability approved because I have a condition that you automatically qualify for it once diagnosed. While I admit that there are lots of cases of social security disability, I know from personal experience that many of the posts that have been written in this thread tells me that the person writing the post doesn't have a clue as to what they are talking about. Social Security disability is very well screened and you are subject to be re-evaluated at their leisure. To collect it you must have overwhelming medical documentation to prove you qualify for it. Yes. I have one of those handicapped parking permits and somedays I am quite thankful for it. I see those things being abused all of the time. That's something that I wish would be policed a bit more carefully. Someday, some of you may very well need to go onto social security disability. When, and if that day comes for you, try to think back and remember some of the things you people have said in this thread. If you knew what you were talking about you would know how many forms you have to fill out. The tons of medical documentation you have to provide. You can receive social security disabilty payments that will begin on the actual date that they determine you became disabled but they don't pay any further back than two years and there is a 6 month waiting period from the date they determine you are disabled. Most people do not collect any back payments for more than 18 months. If you do your homework, you will find out that many of the things you believe about social security disability, and much of what has been written here is not correct. There is fraud in this system and I am sure there are those out there that take advantage of it but those people are found out about in due time and once discovered are dealt with sternly. There was a person in a small town near where I live who received a lengthy jail sentence for social security disability fraud. Do your home work and then come back with your remarks when you know what you're talking about.

Shame and a sham that people that bitch about the poor man collecting what people paid in for aren't bitching about all the corporate welfare and fraud that amounts to trillions in losses.

Does not everyone over a certain age get an annual (?) letter from the SS administration saying approx what your benefits will be if... And listing how much you paid in?

Yes. You can also request one of those things just about anytime you might want one. I think they push a button and a computer spits it out.
