We just had an American President threaten other Americans with "a very heavy force" if they dared to protest at his birthday party/military parade. The message was abundantly clear. Has an American President ever done that before? Not that I know of. No other President has ever suppressed opposing speech with clear and specific threats.

If we're not alarmed by that, if we don't see what they're protesting against, that kind of blatant authoritarianism, then we may be lost.

Of course, back here in reality, there is no risk that we are heading down any such path.

I don’t care if the politicians were liberal or conservative. Politics by assassination is absolutely unacceptable. When they capture the assailant, assuming they get the right guy, I hope he gets tried and convicted. I doubt he could get the death penalty. But if he got it, I’d support it.

All of the European Kings and Queens preside over Constitutional Monarchies, so yes, all of the kings and Queens in Europe would definitely allow peaceful protests against the government, including "no kings".

They have anti monarchy demonstrations regularly in Australia, Canada, Great Britain, and other European nations. Antiquated, expensive and pointless.

I do think monarchy has a point and a purpose, but I understand why the opinion exists. I think it provides a leadership focus for people outside of politics. Pomp and circumstance, customs, history, and all that jazz. Like celebrities. A focus for attention and gossip, but no political power.
