Finally we got my wife's family setup on Skype.
She hasn't seen her Father in 3 years, nor her brand new cousin.
Her family is in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

Skype's a VoIP (Voice over IP) to make cheap or free calls worldwide including video calls if you have a mic and webcam.
Ubuntu 10.10 uses Empathy as its default VoIP application, earlier versions used Ekega. Vonage supposedly works that way also. There are ways to connect a land line to your computer to take full advantage of the applications available.
