I was really intrigued by this story when I saw this on World News tonight. I was surprised that I can't recall having heard of his accomplishments prior to now particularly since he was a Tuskegee Airman who had won gold in the Olympics, that's pretty memorable.

MARIN COUNTY, Calif. (KRON) – It’s a new beginning for one high school in Marin County.

Sir Francis Drake High School has been renamed Archie Williams High School. The new name honors a local hero – Archie Williams – who left a legacy behind.

His long list of accomplishments began at the Olympics when he won gold in the 400-meter dash.

Williams returned to California and graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in mechanical engineering.

He then went off to be a flight instructor with the Tuskegee airmen during World War II.

He continued his career as an Army weather officer and retired as lieutenant colonel. His work didn’t stop there.

Williams returned to his home state of California and began teaching at the school which would go on to be named after him today.
Williams roamed the schools’ halls for over 20 years. One former student says he never gave up on a kid.

This has been in the works for nine months. The community pushed for the name change after the George Floyd protest.

Records show that Sir Francis Drake – the original name of this school – was involved in English slave trade.

Local school leaders say Archie Williams embodies the values students have found as members of a wonderful school community.
The school will begin raising funds to support signage changes, a new mascot, and anything else that follows changing the school’s name.

To compare a track star to one of the most important explorers in history is ridiculous. But the WWII vet apparently was a very nice guy and much more relevant in that he showed that in the USA before "civil rights" racism never prevented any intelligent citizen from being a success so this makes sense.

They are the most overrated pilots of all time, but he did win a gold medal so im ok with it. We need to settle down with the Tuskegee airman praise though. They were hardly the best flying unit out there, they just happened to be black and did better than average, and got infected with syphilis. All the great shit about them isnt even true, like them never losing a flying fortress. That is a myth. They lost several.

You have your groups mixed up. The Tuskegee Airmen were not a part of the group of men who were infected with syphilis and had the physicians pretend to treat them so that they could study the mental deterioration caused by the advanced stages of the disease.

And while the Tuskegee Airmen did not have a spotless record, they did have the lowest rate of loss for the bombers that they escorted, so much so that the bomber pilots began insisting that only the red tails escort them.

They achieved all they did while under adverse circumstances, fighting for freedom for the Allies while in a racially segregated and hostile military environment, fighting against Hitler's white supremacy beliefs

Despite their distinguished wartime record, the Tuskegee Airmen returned to an America unwilling to recognize their contributions. Racism and segregation continued to have a stranglehold on the country. Instead of being greeted with a hero’s welcome, the Tuskegee Airmen were segregated as soon as they disembarked the ships that brought them home. German prisoners of war were treated better than black Americans. It would be decades before their war efforts were acknowledged or even widely known, and it could be said that even today many people do not know about the remarkable achievements of the Tuskegee Airmen. Misinformation, or lack of any factual information at all, is rampant

So you want a school named after someone who was never an American. A man who never lived in America and never did one thing in his life for America.

You don't want a school named after an American who served our nation and rose to the rank of Lt Colonel, who has a very long list of accomplishments in his life and gave most of his life to serve our nation.

Wow whatever happened to America First?

Cool.

Why the fuck did they name the school after Drake anyway? A Tuskegee airman is a much better representation of America.

What was your combat air record during World War II, big mouth?

Tuskegee Airmen badasses?...Brave ground breakers?...Heroic warriors?...Great Americans?

You bet your ass on all four accounts.

Even so, their great record for escort flights is at least as much on the racism of the Luftwaffe, as it is a product of their bravery and dedication...No German pilot wanted to suffer the ignominy of being shot down by a black man.

All that said, it's a good thing that a school is named after one of their finest.

Yea it was great that he could only use Colored Only restrooms, go to the back of the restaurant to receive the food he had purchased, could be called out of his name, fought for his country and wasn't not allowed to use the benefits that were afforded to white veterans. Only racist fools like you and MeBelle see that as a good thing.

He is black, so that mantra doesn't apply to him.

Let's be honest. The main reason they renamed the school after Mr. Williams is because he's black. In their eyes, that was his real accomplishment.
