Back in the 1980s, a Washington Post journalist wrote a story about her interactions with a poor, black DC family in which drugs were rampant. The heart-breaking part was of her telling of the 8-year-old heroin addict (I seem to remember his name was Jimmy), and every day was another installment.

EVERYONE was talking about it. This was before internet of course, and the first thing people did in the evening was crack open their copy of The Washington Post to learn of the latest of poor little Jimmy.

The story was well-researched and beautifully written. The journalist ultimately won a Pulitzer for her work.

The problem? It turned out she MADE THE WHOLE THING UP.

Affirmative action was in force since my first job, when I lost out on a promotion because, as the hiring manager admitted to me* with no witnesses, that HER boss pressured her to hire a black woman.
