The question of the wisdom of giving U.S. weapons to Israel aside, I wouldn't call them religious fanatics. That's just not the impression I get.

Israel have some of there own fanatics as well...

They have people in parliament who openly said they want a Greater Isreal which involved Ethnic Cleansing and even genocide..
