Should assistant suicide be allowed for old age ???

I had a close relative 84 years old last year tell us adamantly she wanted to die while she was in the hospital with heart trouble. She was repeating this over and over to us and the doctors. Today, she’s doing very well with the right medication and adamant she wants to be around to see her grand children grow up. Gotta be careful with this.

That is why a patient should not make their decision on their own

That doesn't happen. Hyperbole dismissed.
What does happen is worse. They are allowed to die with food and water being withheld. Long before someone starves to death they would be dehydrated to death. A long process and one of the most painful ways to die that there is.

No one is permitted to just painfully die.

Have you looked at the case of Terry Schiavo? That's just the one we know about. The medical providers wanted my roommate to die like that. I stopped them.

I am aware. There is a difference in whether people should be kept alive or killing them.

I have MANY contemporaries and family members whose whole life is little more than waiting for the next doctor's appointment. They do a few things like go to church or the ladies' club, but even going out for a walk is no longer possible, let alone biking, bowling, or playing a round of golf.

Once you are on Medicare you become a "Cash Cow" for the medical industry. Every time you have a significant test they uncover something else that requires treatment, and your PCP sends you off to yet another specialist - even as you insist that you have no indication of a problem.

I would support legislation that creates a dignified way of ending it all without the shame of committing suicide with a gun, car, or a spectacular leap.

My generation of Boomers has always said that, "If I ever get to that stage..." I will end it all, but it doesn't seem to be turning out that way. We are clinging to life tenaciously, even as life itself becomes miserable.

Either way you have made the choice to end it. I noted my friend earlier. He made the choice and it didn't involve the costs of doctors and hospitals. Just took enough of his cancer pain meds to not wake up. I saw no shame in that. Do you?

Medical advances allow them to keep your heart beating no matter how terminal you are

Just because you can keep living doesn’t mean you should

There comes a time when you say …..enough

It isn't really living is it? over the years i have lost quite a few close relatives who were terminaly ill and in pain including my parents, i have seen the suffering up close and no one should have to go through that, some people have gone to Dignitas in Switzerland but it is unlawful to take a family member from the UK so people can face charges, from what i have seen they give you a drink or a intravenous jab and you go to sleep, if you wish you could have your favourite music playing.

You should be allowed to go if you want. Its your life. Whether its by your hand, or someone willing to help end your suffering.
Making suicide illegal is asinine.

Let’s say you are aging but not super old !
Let’s say you suffer from low back pain
Let’s say you are terrified about your hire ability due to mediocre business resume and lack of recommendations

Let’s say your religion forbids suicide by yourself

Let’s say you wish you were young again with good back who’s life was about sports

why can’t assistant suicide by an option ??

Oh I was thinking about this poor guy I meet online. He is from New Mexico and around 50
If someone is suffering without hope of improving, let them chose. I’m 69 today…YAY! Luckily I feel good for my age, the usual aches and pains to be expected but at the moment I would rather be alive, if I was incapacitated I would find a way out.

If they can relay a desire to die, they can do it themselves.
This HAS to be satire. Nobody can be this thick.

Terry Schiavo felt nothing, because Terry Schiavo had the mental faculties of a carrot.

If there were a poll, I would vote no. The reason being is, the trickle effect. As soon as you set the ball rolling, in time more groups will want to be included, then where does it end.
