Both Trump and Biden were presidential candidates at the time of the debate—they were both selected by their constituents in the primaries earlier this year. Neither of them wete the nominee because the conventions had not yet occurred. On the other hand, Harris is not, hasn't received a single vote from the Democratic constituency and was placed into the role by her Democratic leadership after they forced the previous candidate out.
