URBANA, Ill. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Roland Burris says he wasn't trying to do any wheeling or dealing when he talked to then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich's brother about being appointed to the Senate.
Burris was at the University of Illinois for a series of tours and meetings Wednesday. After a tour at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, Burris reiterated his denial that he'd been involved in any type of pay-to-play scheme regarding his Senate seat.
His comments came a day after the release of a transcript of a conversation with Robert Blagojevich in which Burris offers to "personally do something" for Rod Blagojevich's campaign fund. Burris on Wednesday said the transcript shows he's been truthful.
Burris says he didn't try to buy the Senate seat once held by President Barack Obama and never committed perjury. He's been scrutinized since his appointment by the now-ousted governor in December and for changing his story about whether he promised anything in exchange for it.
A federal judge in Chicago ruled that the U.S. Senate Ethics Committee can listen to a phone conversation between Burris and former Gov. Rod Blagojevich's brother. The FBI secretly recorded the conversation about three weeks before Blagojevich's arrest.
The ethics committee began a preliminary investigation into how Burris got his job, and the Sangamon County State's Attorney was asked to determine whether perjury charges were warranted.
