I heard Michael Steele on the radio yesterday talking about his bid to be the RNC Chair.

He said, "Change is coming"

I laughed so hard I was teary eyed and choking.

"The Republican Party needs to reconnect with American voters, broaden its outreach to new audiences and offer solutions to the problems we face as a nation.

The Republican Party is a coalition of interests. It needs a leader who understands those interests, can balance their concerns, can motivate people to act and can build and sustain a political organization that can once again claim victory in national elections.

We believe that leader is Michael Steele.

He will make being a Republican a source of pride once again."

Oh yeah, he'll probably be running against Newt Ginghrich for the post .... Classic.

But fact is, Steele would probably be the best thing republicans can do for themselves.

Times .. they are a'changin'

Oh goody goody, it's early and already we are spreading the "black Democrats are good" "black Republicans are bad/laughable/and all sorts of racial ephitats.... manure.

makes us all look so intelligent dosen't it?

Actually.. i like Steele... but I think he is wrong on this...

The REPs are not going to do better by watching the DEMs go farther left and then have the REPs try and become the 'Democratic Party Lite'

Here's one thing that is undeniavle .. republicans are not going to do better by relying on the same base to win national elections .. in fact, they won't even be able to win many state elections relying on that base .. evidenced by the fact that their presence in the House has completely disappeared from the New England region.

Ya think?

Why it's almost like they suspect that the other 98% of the American population actually matters!

Isn't the Republican's perjoritive term for caring about the well-being of the people in a nation demogoguery?

Imagine giving a damn what happens to working Americans.

Why...that's socialism, isn't it?

I haven't read a single post here that says Steele is "bad or laughable"

I said he was probably the best option for republicans to take .. and it isn't Steele that is so damn laughable .. it's the irony.

There you go again. Making a statement or yours and blaming the left.

It would be hard to tell. There aren't a lot of them.

When asked this question, Bill O Reilly just laughed it off and made it sound like no one knew why there were no Black Senators or why Blacks are so underrepsented in the RNC.

As I was listening to the interview I knew that if Steele had said "Yes we can" I was going to laugh myself into a coma.

Truth is, republicans should be begging Steele to take the RNC post.

There you go again. Making a statement or yours and blaming the left.

That is the debating game some of the Republicans like to play on this board is it not?

They make outrageous statements claiming that's what the opposition wants/believes/does.

They invent strawmen and then knock those inventions of their own design down, and laud themselves as heroic defenders of rational thinking, freedom and liberty.

They're truly pathetic.

But if you leave that base completely behind, you're going to create a new group of voters that will want their uber-Christian conservative candidate. So if Republicans move left, and Democrats move far left, a third party will emerge that is strictly radical right-wingers holding on to old ideals. And while the first two parties split up the liberal votes, the right-wingers will swoop in and win elections.

The splintering of the two corporate parties is the best thing that could happen to America.

There should be viable 3rd, and even 4th and 5th political parties.

Democrats are centrists .. they are not liberals. They run from their liberals constiuents during general elections. They can remain as the party of centrists .. and the left can form or get behind a party that supports what they do.

Christian conservatives can have their own party and republicans can support whatever it is they believe.

I see nothing but win/win.

The Republicans can't win by appealing to the Huckabee/Palin crowd. Those people are way too out of touch with reality.

They also can't win with supply-side, free market, anti-regulation philosophy anymore.

What the Republicans need to do is reform as a moderately conservative, fiscally responsible, reasonably pro-business, but not anti-labor party.

This is what they were before the Reagan revolution. Even Nixon said:

"We are all Keynisian now".

Of course if the Democrats do well in running the country for the next 4 years, it'll be hopeless for Republicans any which way.

In that case they'd better leave the Republican name with the Huckabee/Palin crowd and form a new middle of the road party and hope to attract conservative democrats.

 yeah, sure
if you believe that, then you are delusional

No, I'm informed .. a state of being I highly recommend

Calling democrats liberals is stupid

Bill Clinton, whom I'm sure you think is a liberal, created the republican wing of the Democratic Party, the DLC .. did you miss that?

DC, BAC, face it that argument goes nowhere.

One man's ceiling is another man's floor.

Terms like centrist, rightist and leftist all depend on your presuppositions about what consitutes those positions.

And worse, when you look at the positions of both parties you discover that there is no internal political science consistency in either of them, anyway.

Stop playing by the insiders insane language games.

They are designed to make having rational discussions about politics impossible.

while i agree that it depends on perspective, someone would have to be WAY out on the left to think the dems are centerist
