The younger generation is gaining, the older generation is more in tune with Democrats because of social security and medicare, minorities won't go to the conservative movement, gays won't go the conservative movement, Catholics vote for a Democrat, Jews vote for a Democrat... so you've got a fight over middle and upper class white people and hope that they're enough to offset the balance.
