What I said was that much of the world mistakenly thought Russia might become civilized, but the former Soviet states, which had suffered for 45 years under Russian oppression and brutality, understood before the much of the rest of the world that it was a mistake to trust Russia at that time (or now) and wanted to join NATO for protection against Russia.Listen to your brainfarts - Russians were civilized in 1997, so NATO moved east to the Russian borders...

The question was, should NATO treat these states as essentially vassal states of Russia and not recognize their right to decide what was in their own best interest or should NATO treat these states as sovereign states that could make their own decisions? The very fact that Russia claimed the right to decide what these states should do proves they were right to want to join NATO and that NATO was right to accept them.
